Love this Harry - and I love when I have an outfit that works which I feel great in and I know I can go back to it, sometimes exactly the same, sometimes with that little tweak. Even just different earrings, necklace or bag.
This is the joy that comes from having a large, well-curated closet: wearing your favourite things over and over, and shaking things up by changing shoes, jewelry and accessories. There is a great deal of comfort in going back to the same well, knowing that you look and feel awesome.
Whenever I’ve come off a no-buy, I find that my shopping is much more discriminating and fussy. “Is this worthy of my closet?”
Harry, YES. When I read you I always suffer from I WANT TO HIGHLIGHT THE WHOLE THING ITIS! You resonate with me so much, and this is something I am learning in my own way, too, what new things take away *rather than add* -- and therefore what *not buying* does FOR me, not against me. But maybe the biggest aha of all is something I can't highlight/quote, because it's looking at you in these looks. Just the way you look so cool/chic yes but also like someone calm, settled, who knows who she is. You look beautiful, and I want to applaud. I am SO GRATEFUL you are here and that I found you.
This is so helpful and insightful. I'm trying to wear the same outfit in different settings and seeing how the location informs how I'll get dressed. Like would I style these pieces the same for a coffee shop versus book shopping versus a day at home? It helps to place yourself in new settings where you can wear the same thing — just slightly tweaked!
I feel like I am coming to a place in my wardrobe journey where this really resonates. There are days when I put an outfit together with items from the wardrobe I have been curating and have the thought that “my wardrobe is really working for me!”. The clothes aren’t new, but the way I have put them together is new. And it’s such a wonderfully content feeling.
I am an unabashed outfit repeater...Those repeated outfits are most definitely the ones that make me feel fabulous and dare I say, confident. I love big, dangling, crazy earrings and because my most favorite outfits are black (fall black, spring black, summer black and of course winter black) this is how I change it up. They are the focal point against the black. My repeated outfit can feel new. AND I am 62, have wild short gray hair and I just don't give a crap (keeping it clean) whether someone says or thinks..."you always wear the same thing" Just do it.. and enjoy... YOU.
As someone who's done a No Buy twice, I can say that there is no way to know how you will feel once it ends. I rushed to my favourite charity shops the minute it ended, only to realise that I had become super picky and that now i knew a lot more about my personal style - which ended in my leaving the shops empty handed! And I love that. I believe an identity crisis in the middle of the No Buy is a good sign, means that you are challenging and questioning your previous beliefs re. shopping etc. 💗
I find this so inspirational—and you always look fresh and put together in all your outfits! I’ve been using Indyx too and I’m loving figuring out what items I wear most. I need to do the same with outfits
