After witnessing so much love from other writers on Substack regarding my Journals, (in particular my style journal) I thought it only right to do a dedicated piece on the subject. In this post i’m going to walk you through exactly how I set mine up, what I use it for and how you can create your own. I’ve also made some Canva templates that are exactly the same as the ones I used for paid subscribers! Enjoy!
Why make a style journal?
There’s just something infinitely more creative about seeing your ideas on paper. Getting your glue stick and scissors out will bring you back to play, which is I believe, one of the most important aspects of style. It makes it less about ‘wrong or right’ or ‘good and bad’ as opposed to a creative expression.
I love digital planning, but sometimes it’s just really bloody lovely to have a break from your phone. I love having a reference point somewhere that isn’t digital. More times than not I flick through it at night before I go to sleep, or anytime I want to pick up my phone out of habit, I pick up this instead. I also use this as a way to record my own Wardrobe Playdates which helps me workshop outfit ideas.
Having a place to look back and record how you felt about certain looks, or the memories made while wearing them is incredibly special. I have no doubt it’s something future me will be very grateful I did. I love the idea of being able to look back one day and see how my style evolved, and what remained constant. I’m intrigued by what i’ll remember when I look back at past outfits, especially those i’ve forgotten that I can take inspiration from at a different age, perspective or place in my life.
