Jeans - Bag - Shoes

Thrifted Item No 1: Denim barn jacket

It’s fair to say me and Dave argued over who should buy this, as he was also very taken by this jacket, but lucky for me, it was a little snug on him. It’s an incredibly soft cotton denim with a beautiful brown corduroy collar and I adore the longer length. It goes with everything, I love it with a double denim look, over a slip dress or worn with my beloved aritzia effortless pants and converse. Did I mention it has pockets on top of pockets? Probably one of my best finds of last year in the thrift store.

Tip No 1: Start in the men’s section

This is where I found the denim barn jacket (above). If like me you have a penchant for oversized, slouchy fits, then your best bet is to start in the men’s section. The first thing I do upon arriving at any thrift store, is head straight to the men’s blazer and suit section, ready to feast my eyes on an array of dinner jackets, two piece suits and interesting jackets.

Thrifted Item No 2: Men’s black blazer

This one won’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s been following me for awhile, but I will never not be excited by a mens black blazer. I think is probably my most worn thrifted piece i’ve ever bought, because it is so incredibly versatile. I wear it most days, and for all occasions. I wore it above for a black tie event, adding a temporary stitch on the inside so I could wear the jacket like a top with nothing but a bra underneath.

Tip No 2: When buying outerwear look for premium fabrics

Namely silk, wool and cashmere. These are the fabrics I will prioritize, especially when looking at things like coats, jackets and blazers. These fabrics sit nicely on the body, and they also stand the test of time in a forever wardrobe when cared for correctly. Note* be mindful of things like moths. To ensure you don’t get any holes in your new found treasure, I recommend using a protective garment bag where possible.

Thrifted Item No 3: Chunky knitted cardigan/jacket

This piece is super special. According to the label it’s handmade. This must have been an epic knitting project for whoever took this on, but I would give them 10/10 for execution and the final result. It’s warm and incredibly cosy, plus it gives so much personality to my AW outfits. Everything about this feels nostalgic, like the kind of piece I could imagine I would have worn as a kid.

Tip No 3: Ask when/what day they put new stock out

I worked in a charity shop/thrift store when I was in my early twenties and stock would be put on the shop floor at certain times of the day, or on certain days, so it’s always worth asking when is the best time to come into the store, especially if you live nearby. This way you can get first dibs on the best pieces. I got to the point where I actually knew a lot of the staff in certain charity shops in my late teens, and they would even save things for me they knew I’d like because I was such a regular.
