My Toteme T Lock Bag has been one of my most used bags this month, and I think one of the things I love most about it IS the contrast stitching. It just adds something a little extra (that little detail) to the sculptural shape without competing with it. It’s also a low stakes way to incorporate this detail into an outfit, doing so via an accessory. However, after falling down a Pinterest rabbit hole on contrast stitching (see above) I’m now on the hunt for this detail in other garments. I especially love it applied to a sheer garment, and I’m also thinking of doing a DIY to one of my shirts. Stay tuned!

The other item i’ve been reaching for throughout April (which I don’t think is a coincidence) are my Mum’s Vintage Prada Mules, which yes, also have contrast stitching. I love that they’re a little twee, a little weird, but the contrast stitching along with the grommets feel like a playful take on the classic mule.

On my radar

I’ll be honest, i’m still not sure i’m a skirt person, but this is such a perfect example of how the contrast stitching takes the skirt from basic, to something a little more interesting in a very subtle way. I also love the styling here, the layered black and white tanks with the skirt. It’s giving Toteme vibes without the price tag!

This shirt is very tempting! I love that the stitching doesn’t go all the way to the last button, it almost creates the shape of a skinny tie.

Planning My 40th Princess Party

I have been blown away by all your suggestions and commitment to Operation 40 (and saying yes to the dress). THANK YOU! Please keep them coming :) I have a ton saved in my notes app and I took to my journal recently to play with some ideas. I’m still feeling the tension between wanting to feel like myself and saying fuck it, and going all out in head to toe feathers! As always, i’ll keep you posted, but what i’m loving is just having something fun to look forward to. The date is set, and the princess party invites have been sent! My Mum even asked me if I want a bouncy castle, to which i’ve concluded it would be rude not to!

After walking the dogs, I settled in for a morning working from home before heading out to run a few errands, followed by heading to a co working space in the afternoon. By LA standards, the temperature was significantly cooler so I reached for some vintage Levis 505’s, a sweater and boot combo while I could still get away with it. I’ve been reflecting on this Toteme Top Handle Bag, and just how much of a workhorse it truly is. I know us fashion folk can throw that word around willy nilly at times, but this bag truly is one of my favorite non vintage pieces. The structural shape makes any outfit verging on too casual that little bit more polished. This felt like a cosy fit, and I was feeling my baby hairs this particular day.

Tuesday

Tuesday started with a beautiful hike. One of my favorite ways to start the day when I know i’ll be working from home for the majority of the day. I find myself getting antsy if i’m not able to leave the house at least once a day.

Once home and showered, I went with a trusty t-shirt dress and my go to Klara Lie Studio earrings (111 wears and counting). One of the greatest lessons my wardrobe has taught me (in relation to working from home), is to reserve a shoe for this purpose. For example, these old Dear Frances slides are my work from home shoes. You could argue they’re just my slippers, but they always feel that little bit more of an intentional shoe choice.

I also opted for a pop of color via my eyeliner. I went for a vivid purple and this always feels like a fun way to change up a go to outfit, is just to do my makeup a little different/opt for a color that isn’t an everyday go to. Especially when I have zoom calls, this is such a nice way to add some interest. Wardrobe lesson: makeup is just another way to accessorize a look. I love how purples make my eyes look more green.

I have this belief that the things i’m scared to write about, the ones I keep ruminating on, are meant to see the light of day. And recently, what’s been on my mind is my size. More specifically, whether it’s helpful leading with it as a content angle, and my thoughts on how I feel about that.

The older I get the more I can’t help but reflect on the past. As such I found myself thinking about my favorite birthdays as a child, and made the executive decision I want my 40th birthday party to be the kind of party six year old me would have loved. One filled with nostalgia that lets my inner child bask in her ‘too muchness’.

The guests of honor will be my two nieces Elva and Eddie, and a few close family friends. The dress code is Marie Antoinette meets Princesses and unicorns. I even made a moodboard in my journal…

I talk so much about the power of play when it comes to our relationship to personal style, and this party feels like the perfect opportunity to do just that. To enjoy being silly, and surrounded by sparkly things. Adulting is hard, and it’s not always fun, so this feels like the perfect opportunity to spend an afternoon letting my inner child run wild!

I’m going to eat all the cake and e numbers I can get my hands on.

I’m going to dance to K Pop Demon Hunters and songs from Frozen.

I’m going to play parce the parcel and musical chairs.

And at the end, I’m going to give all my guests a goody bag (party bag?) that would rival the best 80’s kids birthday party, complete with a slice of cake wrapped in a paper napkin.

Other than when I was a kid, I haven’t really had a party before. Even my wedding was a party of eight people. While i’ll add that was by choice (and it was wonderful!), something about turning 40, and getting through close to two years of some very not fun mental health stuff - I feel called to celebrate being alive. I want to celebrate what a privilege it is to get older.

And because this is a princess party, I need to find a princess dress.

And this is where you come in, my incredible Substack community. I would love for you to help me find the perfect (grown up-ish) princess dress to wear for the day. I have in the past don a Disney Princess costume for the sake of my nieces, but ideally i’d love to find something I could actually wear again, preferably second hand.

My first thought was something with big sleeves a la the dress she wears to the prom in Napoleon Dynamite (‘I like your sleeves…they’re real big’ is maybe one of my favorite lines from a movie ever), but I’m torn between dressing for adult Harry who still wants to feel chic, and my inner six year old who lets face it wants a tiara and something Elsa from Frozen would wear.

I believe there’s a middle ground. I’m open to something I can add fairy wings and a tiara to, that I could also wear again that feels true to my style and who I am as an about to be forty year old woman. I’m going to try really hard not to buy something black, because I want to honor my moodboard. In theory, I think I could feel very much like myself (if not just a little more magical) in butter yellow, a pale blue or some other kind of dusky pastel that offers a classic shape or an interesting texture/feature/cut.

In terms of second hand designer, my brain goes to something by Christopher kane (see below) or Simone Rocha. This caught my eye, but it’s XS, so it’s not going to work.

I mean, if money were no object….(let’s pretend - just for fun) and it was up to my six year old self, she would probably choose one of these:

But if I come back down to earth for a moment, most of these dresses are WAY out of my budget, (which if I had to commit to right now would be less than $200) and probably something i’d be unlikely to wear again. The other issue with second hand designer is finding something that will fit my mid sized body, as so many designers (especially vintage) don’t make my size. But I also don’t want to buy something I’ll only wear once.

My next port of call was the high street/slightly more budget friendly options:

I love the above slip dresses in theory, but they’re final sale, and I have to be honest…I just don’t know if my tits would fall out the side of this? The yellow dress is giving Andy in How to lose a guy in 10 days. I love the way a soft pastel looks in a silk, and the yellow one especially I felt could potentially fit into my wardrobe, but is it too basic? Times like this, I really wish I could afford Schiapparelli lol (a girl can dream).

That’s the issue, beyond the chance to dress up, (which I try my best never to shy away from) it’s the fact this gets to be an occasion that goes beyond being fancy. It gets to be playful in a way that’s a little more out of my comfort zone than usual. I didn’t even give my wedding dress this much thought and attention, so in many ways this feels new to me. This idea of saying ‘yes to the dress’ kind of means even more to me, because it’s for me - adult me and little me. It’s about celebrating the relationship I have with myself. One i’ve worked really hard on, and I believe is just as deserving, as the relationship i’ve built with someone else (if not more so).

So I need your help, I need options.

In terms of sizing i’m looking at XL/US 12/14. I would love to find something that feels like me, but also fits the brief, and of course… something six year old me would feel equally excited about. I enjoy a challenge, and while i’m currently manifesting the perfect dress, please send and any and all candidates my way! (Bonus points if it’s less than $100!)

At least once a week I spend some time printing out photos for my journal and reflecting on how i’ve shifted my measure of success from one centered around work, to one that focuses on my happiness. I’ve been sitting with my discomfort around summer dressing and thinking about how best to overcome it. (I’m determined to become a summer girl this year - more on this soon)

I decided to create a collection in my app called ‘Summer 2026’, in a bid to make new outfit combinations. Outfits I felt excited to wear that also honor where i’m at in regards to my current relationship with my body. The outfits came together pretty effortlessly, but as I looked back on the fifteen or so outfits I had made, it felt like something was missing.

I remember when the infamous Juju Vera shell necklace started doing the rounds on substack - while that particular piece felt like a pass for me personally, what stayed with me was the length of the pendent. I must have made some kind of mental note to remember what I would argue isn’t the piece itself, but the impact of it’s length. It proved a great reminder that proportion goes beyond clothing itself, and the impact of one great accessory.

I quickly fell down a rabbit hole looking at various different tassel and cord pendant necklaces. Many web pages were open, and before I knew it my laptop was overheating.

In my early twenties I remember a particular obsession with a long art deco shaped pendant, a piece of costume jewelry I found in a thrift store. I wore it to death, and loved what it added to my outfits. Looking back with fond memories I realised maybe there was room for a similar piece to anchor my spring summer wardrobe.

I am under no illusion that adding a long cord pendant is new, or ground breaking. I am indeed, very, very late to the party. However, being late to the party when it comes to trends, I would argue, is a brilliant thing.

While everyone wants to be hailed as the first, the originator of an idea, an early adopter… there’s something to be said for waiting it out. Sitting with why you like something and identifying why it speaks to you. Also by waiting, it’s good to see if you still want it once everyone else is wearing it. If the answer is yes then its most likely a strong addition to your wardrobe, a piece that will serve you well. My no buy taught me how to wait, how to sit on the side lines and wait out the hype of a trend. It’s proved to be a really useful skill, one my wardrobe, and my bank balance both thank me for.

Of course there are still some things that I feel instantly drawn to. Pieces that instantaneously call to me without rhyme or reason, but most of the time, it’s like this pendant. It’s a slow burn. It’s understanding both how it would work for me, my style and my wardrobe. This means that trending or not (for the most part), the items in my wardrobe get worn. Building a wardrobe you love, that works hard for you is a marathon, not a sprint.

Trends aren’t the enemy, but they can distract us from what we know works, and the pieces we already love. On one hand they offer the chance to see ourselves through a new lens, to try new things and experiment, but they also have the potential to dilute our own sense of style. I’ve learnt to hold space for the duality that both can be true.

Instead of adding newness for the sake of newness, i’m adding in quality upgrades and pieces that offer a lot of stylistic options to my existing wardrobe. The integration of the old with the new feels incredibly gratifying when both are working together, not against each other.

But back to being late to the party… when I began searching for the perfect cord necklace, there were no shortage of candidates. When you’re late to the party, you’re naturally spoilt for choice across the board: color, shape, style and price point. Considerations included:

As I sat there with a multitude of tabs open, laptop overheating, I decided to move away, take a break from the world wide web and make a cup of tea. During this time I put together some questions for myself to ponder over (because sometimes you just have to step away from the screen)

Q. Can you just make this yourself?

A. Yes, and I have made a few I really like but there’s one I went on a wild goose chase to find that I keep ruminating on. One that I love even more than the ones i’ve made. This one.

Q. How about a cheaper option/something inspired by this piece?

A. I’ve already spent at least forty minutes to an hour scouring through Etsy, and various other sites and nothing feels as good as the one I actually want.

Q. If you do get a cheaper option, are you likely to end up buying the actual piece you want in the end, making this ‘cheaper’ item pretty much redundant?

A. Most likely.

Q. Can you afford the one you actually want and does it integrate seamlessly with your existing wardrobe?

A. Yes and yes!

Girl, just buy the god damn pendant! The one you actually want! (I imagined Ru Paul’s voice as I said this to myself)

And so I bought it. And just look how well it goes with every single look in my spring summer wardrobe…

It always blows my mind how the smallest tweak/ one considered addition can make everything feel new and exciting again. As someone who defaults to an earing, returning to the idea of a necklace as the statement feels new to me. Again it isn’t new, but that’s what I love so much about personal style, it’s about what feels exciting to you. Your take is the only one that matters.

1. Where do you actually find most of your clothes?

For the most part, my first port of call is always second hand shopping, whether that’s via a resale site like Poshmark, Ebay, The Real Real or in person thrifting. There’s something so gratifying about finding something you love second hand. I can’t deny I love a bargain (who doesn’t?) and there’s no better feeling than finding an item you’ve lusted after for a fraction for the price it would have been new.

That being said, there are also benefits to buying certain items new (I wrote about this here), one in particular: when I don’t know my size in a brand and am not able to go into a store to try it on in person. I also LOVE finding pieces IRL when i’m travelling because of the memory that becomes tethered to that item. For example, the mustard suede jacket (above) was purchased from a store in New York during the most fantastic day out with a friend I don’t get to see often. It’s special for many reasons, but the memory is a defining feature for sure.

There’s two camps of people: those who loathe packing, and those that live for it! I fall into the latter. When a girlfriend you don’t get to spend much time with invites you to go house hunting in San Francisco (and stay in a beautiful beach house) you say yes!

The weather was going to be pretty warm, and activities I needed to pack for included: walking around the city/house hunting, beach attire, casual coffees and sightseeing, evening dinners and drinks, as well as clothes to chill in when we got home. The trip would consist of five full days.

Before we get started, I recommend bookmarking this packing live I recorded where you can see me pack in real time and walk you though my initial thinking.

The Set Up & Organization

I’m a firm believer that the limited space a carry on offers is actually what makes packing for a trip so exciting. I love the challenge of making a tight edit, one that allows me different ways to wear my favorite pieces, while also expressing myself in relation to where i’m travelling and what I plan on doing.

My two non negotiables for packing carry on only: my Away Executive Bigger Carry On and my Calpak Luka Duffle bag. I think i’ve used these two items for carry on travel consistently for at least three to four years now. When it comes to practicality, both are faultless. I like to be able to put my laptop in the front pocket of my Away suitcase (especially for a short flight) and anything else I need quick access too without needing to open the entire bag up.

The Calpak Luka Duffle bag is weightless, yet incredibly strong. It’s full to the brim with every pocket you could want or need (including a separate one for your shoes). You could easily use this alone if you were just travelling for one or two nights. But I love having this because it’s big enough to add extra bits and bobs, and store an additional handbag in it. And yes, it does has the open back so you can easily slot it over the top of your suitcase.

In addition to one of my vintage structured bags, I packed my Étoile Oval Toiletry Case* where I put together a travel only edit of my favorite beauty bits. Having a wash bag that’s already set up for travel is one of my biggest flexes, as I don’t have to spend time moving things from one bag to another. I also save miniatures or samples for this bag specifically.

The (Packing) Wardrobe Playdate

Before I can confirm what would make the final edit, I decided to have a wardrobe playdate off camera after I did the live packing video. One of my favorite things about this part of the process is that I always come up with new outfit combinations I might not of thought of before. Even if these outfits don’t get worn on the trip, I have new ways to wear the pieces I love that I can bank for the future. Here’s what I came up with:

The biggest change after doing the packing live, was swapping out my Toteme Trench Coat for my vintage brown suede jacket. After realizing the weather was going to be a lot warmer than I had initially expected, I decided the shorter suede jacket would be a better fit. I also decided to leave my Aritzia Effortless Pants behind and go all in on my vintage Levis (with the knowledge i’d have my LeSet pants for chilling).

Anymore than eighteen looks felt like overkill for a 5 day trip, but rest assured, there were many more outfits I could make using these pieces. That left some room to get dressed based on my mood and some spontaneity. So now you’ve seen the possibilities, let’s get into what I actually wore, and what I didn’t.

Out of 31 items I packed, only six didn’t get worn. I feel pretty good about that, especially given two items were accessories and four were clothing. I think one of the biggest obstacles that stopped me wearing as many outfits as I had hoped is the fact we spent most of the days we were out, out all day. I always have this Mariah Carey fantasy of getting changed throughout the day but it’s just not realistic when you’re driving all over the city.

A classic piece that keeps on giving, and bonus points for easily with standing 10K + steps a day.

The Silver Pinky Stack - Three inconspicuous heavily tarnished rings were thrown together in a thrift shop tray for $5 each, and I had a hunch they were real silver. Lucily, my hunch proved right. Another highly competitive category, filled with exceptional talent, but these rings offer something very unique to my wardrobe, that could easily rival a high end jewelry brand. A show stopper in their own right.

LeSet Margo Tapered Pant - The pant that does it all. These have actually overtaken my Aritzia effortless Pants as my most worn pants. I have them in chocolate and black. Given that I work from home, these are a non negotiable closet staple. Comfortable, 100% cotton and cut beautifully, these can be dressed up or dressed down with ease. I also love these for travelling.

The Chanel Slingbacks - The shoe I genuinely wear year round. As spring turns to summer I swap out wearing these with wool pants, to lighter linen pieces. I adore these slingbacks with white linen shorts and a linen button up. And then sure enough, as AW approaches I switch them up with vintage denim and tailored trousers again.

Most unexpected comeback

The Antique Silver Choker - Some pieces you grow to love. This was a sixteenth birthday gift from my grandparents, that at the time I had no idea what to do with. It sat in a box unworn and unloved for many many years. That is until I did my year long no buy, and low and behold I fell back in love with it hard and fast. It’s now one of my most worn items of jewelry. Whether It’s worn with a simple tee and jeans, over a button up collar sticking up, a turtleneck or layered with other jewels it just makes any outfit feel that little bit more special. The Porto Pouch - My friend Gina calls this my sweetie pouch, and while she is cute as a button (both the bag and my friend) it’s also the easiest bag to pack. It’s understated and yet it still helps lift an outfit. The soft leather, and the ruching at the top add a nice textural element to outfits I want to dress up. It’s comfortable to carry and it just feels fun.

The Toteme Trench Coat - This is a very special category, and while all the nominees deserve a huge round of applause, my Toteme Trench Coat is a very worthy winner. While it isn’t a piece I wear everyday, it’s a piece that filled such a huge gap in my wardrobe. The quality, the cut and the fit are out of this world. I feel a million dollars every time I wear it, and I genuinely believe it’s a piece I will own for many, many years to come. 1. Tops with a Victorian nod

I’m feeling pulled towards looks grounded by a minimal tassel, and anything that gives a little mod towards victorian romance. While I don’t have a lot of sheer pieces in my wardrobe, I really enjoyed wearing this Nili Lotan silk top last year and I can’t wait to wear it again. If I pair it with suede it can read a little more bohemian (which I don’t hate) but I’d also like to experiment with ways to add contrast in a dressier way.

2. Bermuda shorts with outerwear/sweaters and button ups

A bermuda short with any kind of long sleeve, whether that’s a blazer, a button up or sweater feels like the perfect way for me to nod to spring, especially for the fact that it won’t be long before it’s too hot to enjoy a longer sleeve. After reading this - has me excited to get my half zip sweaters out to wear with my bermudas, and i’m also tempted at the thought of a rugby style shirt with this look, especially with a more elegant shoe. (I’m thinking these for daytime errands, and with these for evening drinks).

3. Linen tailored pants with a tan/brown belt

I’m not gonna lie, I love me a stretchy waistband, but I also love a pant with a belt loop. There’s something fresh about a slightly tailored linen pant. It feels like the precursor to spring switch ups. I bought this pair a while ago from Gap and they are soooo comfy! I honestly wish I had bought the black linen pair too when they had them. I cannot wait to rewear this look.

4. Jackets as tops with vintage denim/simple black pants

So many brilliant pieces have been written about how the jacket IS the top (here by and here by ), and I couldn’t agree more! Especially when it comes to going out out (as we say in England). I have to admit as a somewhat sweaty person, I still wear a thin tank underneath (neck line permitting) majority of the time, just in case! A fancy/interesting jacket paired with a simple black pant or a pair of vintage Levi’s is a look I can’t wait to wear during the cooler LA evenings. I found this Ganni one in an Outlet and the moment I put it on, i’m like: outfit done!

5. Linen blazers with pants that puddle

I purchased the above linen blazer years ago from The Frankie Shop, and come spring/ summer it’s one of the few pieces of outerwear that’s still cool enough to wear as the heat in LA increases. I cannot wait to wear this with my new Donni Pop Simple Pants that I bought to upgrade the H&M ones I had last year. I love this blazer with pretty much anything but especially with a slouchy pant and a loafer, or a flip flop.

6. Soft sleeveless knits against angular/sharp accessories

Some pieces in our wardrobes are extra special - this hand knitted top my Mama made me will forever be one of mine. Again, imagine this with those Donni pop pants, or my brown Donni linen simple pants that have a very similar shape. I love the texture this knit offers with a more simple trouser, but I also love to add contrast to the softness by adding in more structural accessories, like an angular pair of sunnies, or suprise suprise… a structured bag.

7. Button ups as outerwear

Whether it’s a flannel piece, linen or cotton, I always think a button up worn as outerwear, especially on warmer spring days is such a great way to layer. While the above outfit is rooted in simplicity, the addition of a woven accessory stops it reading basic or boring. It’s slouchy, with a little edge.

8. Trench coats with everything and anything

I love my trench coat, and I feel fairly confident in saying I always will! It’s an item that’s been in my wardrobe since my twenties. My first trench was a $50 vintage Burberry Trench from Camden Market, and in my thirties I upgraded to the Totome one. I just love the shape, the cut and the color. It has served me so well! Similar to how I feel about blazers, I just feel like such a boss when I wear it. (I hesitated writing the word ‘boss’ but that’s genuinely what it evokes for me, a feeling of power) Speaking of which, the trench coat has it’s very own super power. It can both elevate and tone down an outfit as needed. For example, you can have something very loud on underneath, think clashing prints, lots of color and it somehow grounds everything. The same is true for a very minimal outfit, a trench adds some drama to balance the look.

1. Pamela Anderson has her own skincare brand called Sonsie, and after kindly being gifted a few of the items I cannot stop raving about the Multi Moisture Cream*. Not only is it a super hydrating moisturiser, but you can also layer it up as a mask. (I love a multi-purpose product). It’s also great under makeup, the exact texture of moisturiser I would have used in my pro makeup kit.

2. The fact i’m now on first name terms with both my seamstress and my cobbler!

3. Finding this 100% silk vintage Eileen Fisher jacket second hand for $30 on Poshmark! I cannot wait to style it.

I recently made the decision to come back to Instagram after a year and a half break. I appreciate this in itself isn’t by any means newsworthy, but it’s still something that has brought up a lot for me. While i’m doing things differently this time around, I can’t help but feel this undeniable pull to delete past posts, parts of myself that once existed and thought a certain way, but doing that feels like hiding the truth. I’m all for new beginnings, and multiple chapters, but I don’t want to shame my past self. She was learning, growing, and it was messy. It still is.

We are constantly evolving as human beings. While some feelings get stronger and we gravitate with more conviction towards certain thoughts and beliefs, there are others we let go of, or that move to the back row of our minds instead of the front. And sometimes, they’re just in a timeout!

Vintage Lederer Moc Croc Bag instead of The Hermes Croc Kelly

I have been hunting for vintage Lederer pieces for some time now, and this has been the first drop i’ve managed to get my hands on not one, but three pieces in total. The Lederer ‘kelly styles’ typically date from 1950s - 1980s and are incredibly rare. This piece is such a classic, and a snip in price compared to a Hermes croc kelly.

I’ve always liked The Row Banana bag, but when I saw this vintage (most likely 90’s) Bally piece I honestly thought it was even cooler. It’s also a great reminder how many luxury brands build their collections on designs that have been around forever.

A structured bag in a trapezoid style (basically the kelly bags) are my personal preference to elevate any outfit. The High Class bags are thought to have been produced in the very early 2000’s, with excellent craftsmanship and leathers. This one has a beautiful patina, and has that perfect lived in look.

I jumped with joy when I sourced this vintage Bally piece! Not only does it offer 90’s minimalism, it also has a striking resemblance to the Celine Romy bag. The leather is like butter, slouchy and soft, and surprisingly roomy.

Vintage High Class Turn Lock Bag in Blue instead of The Hermes Kelly

I sooo nearly kept this one for myself, because I loved the color and the size. This is such a rare color to source, and feels closer in size to a kelly 35. The leather has the most beautiful grain, similar to a togo leather. Is this not the most perfect color for spring?!

Another super rare Bally colorway! This bag feels closer to a Kelly 28, and it’s in such beautiful condition. The leather is smooth with a structured shape.

The bag that started it all for me personally. This Bally piece is such a classic, and the perfect alternative to a Hermes Sellier Kelly. Not gonna lie, I think this vintage Bally clutch is infinitely cooler than the YSL one. Big clutches are back for spring summer in a big way, and this one oozes character. Pair with a trench, a blazer, or a light turtleneck and you have the perfect statement accessory.

The moment I saw this vintage gem, I knew I had to add it to this collection. The chocolate brown leather has a pebbled finish similar to epsom leather with gold tone hardware. It also has a detachable shoulder strap.

Another stunner I really wanted to keep for myself (I know, it’s truly an occupational hazard) is this timeless vintage Furla Tote, that also has a detachable shoulder strap. Tods leather is one of the best in my opinion, and far superior to many other luxury houses. This tote would be the chicest airport tote, or perfect for work thanks to how roomy it is. The leather is the most beautiful milk chocolate color, and it has a subtle pebble finish making it very durable for everyday.

It’s the tone of brown with this bag that I fell in love with. The perfect ‘rust’ color and beautiful leather. I’ve been loving this color bag with navy outfits recently.

This toffee color tan Bally bag is very similar to a Bally I had in the previous drop that I was low key obsessed with, and so were all of you. I had a lot of emails after that piece sold, and while this bag style isn’t exactly the same, it’s still a beautiful piece in it’s own right and very similar.

I like to give you variety, and given that the structured bags are what i’m becoming known for, I wanted to make sure with this collection I could offer more options when it came to different leathers and finishes. This piece also has a detachable strap and is a beautiful tan hue.

I’m sure this topic has been written about so many times, by so many people, but I understand why. Getting dressed has a lot more meaning than it sometimes gets credit for. I’ve been thinking about this a lot recently - the simple act of getting dressed brings me so much joy. I’ve always known it, but recently there have been these special (often mundane) moments where I find myself revelling in the magic of it. A deep appreciation for what it gives me.

It’s a multitude of things, but what I keep coming back to is that it’s simply something that makes me feel really, really good. I love a PJ day as much as the next person, but getting dressed in an outfit that makes me feel good just hits different, even if no one else gets to see it. Something in my brain chemistry lights up, and it sets the tone for my day. No matter what else does or doesn’t get ticked off the to do list, the fact I got dressed and was able to find some relief, even joy in that always feels like a win.

There’s this myth that good style has to be extra (sorry I couldn’t think of a better word) or worthy of a photo, and sometimes it is, but more often than not it’s in the pieces that signal safety. That tell our brain you’re here, and you’re showing up for yourself. It’s the pieces we put on that change the way we hold ourselves, and ultimately offer a reminder of what we’re capable of.

I think this awareness comes from what I experienced during the decline of my mental health over a year and a half ago, as well as navigating my way back to myself. Clothes have always been, and continue to be a part of how I cope, how I heal, and how I explore this world and my relationship to it.

Somedays getting dressed is the win. It’s enough. And other days we get to experience the magic of putting pieces together while our inner artist takes the reigns. No matter the outcome, it isn’t about getting it ‘right’. It’s merely an exploration of how to get to that deeply personal place where our brain says ‘this makes me feel good, this feels like me, or more specifically a ‘me’ I really want to embody’. It’s a map without a singular route or location.

After two decades working in fashion, I find myself increasingly underwhelmed by it - the noise, the constant newness for newness sake. I will always appreciate the artistry but what I love more than anything is taking myself for a coffee date and just watching people. I love nothing more than observing how people put things together and how they experience life in their clothes.

The older I get the more I find myself inspired by the everyday woman and how she dresses, not models. I think this is one of the reasons Substack feels so special. Most of us aren’t dressing for the red carpet, or a TV appearance. We’re dressing for everyday scenarios, most of which are anything but glamorous. But we get dressed anyway, because it makes us feel good, because we can, and I think that’s a beautiful thing.

Getting dressed continues to offer a sense a stability in uncertain times. It offers an outlet to play, something as adults we lose touch with all too quickly. If you’ve been here a while, you already know ‘play’ is one of my favorite words, especially when it comes to how I approach my style, and my wardrobe.

My sister recently started her own Instagram (@lucyfhenderson) and I’ve felt hugely inspired by her and the conversations she’s been sharing about style. She’s been sharing her own ‘not buying anything new’ challenge, and I just love seeing her share the experience, and the creativity coming out of it. I can see how much joy getting dressed brings her, and it’s felt good to be reminded of this.

The content I want to consume appreciate is how the everyday woman navigates life, the real scenarios, and how her clothes are a teeny tiny percent of how she navigates these complexities.

There is so much joy in getting dressed. Sometimes I find comfort just thinking about what I want to wear without having to put a single item on my body. It’s incredibly soothing when i’m stressed. My imagination takes over with how I might feel and who I can be in those clothes. It’s all me, but often it’s the parts of me that need a little coaxing out of the shadows and into the light. The timid parts, the parts that don’t always feel confident - they rely on the supporting role my clothes offer, the very literal comfort blanket sometimes required in order to face the day.

If I had to pinpoint those ‘comfort blanket’ items in my wardrobe, I’d say these are my default:

A Great Pant With A Stretchy Waistband

IYKYK. On warmer days, it’s the Donni Pop Pant (I wear an XL). 100% cotton, and insanely comfy. While I did have to get them hemmed, they are already proving to be a great addition to my wardrobe. Granted these are a newer discovery for me, but I haven’t stopped wearing them since they arrived. The perfect amount of slouch and a nice drape around the foot. Big shout out to for this stellar recommendation! Another honorable mention I have to include in this category are the LeSet Margo Tapered Pocket Pants - also wonderful, and one of my most worn items of 2025.

On cooler days, it’s the Eileen Fisher Wool Lantern Pant* (I wear a L). The shape is perfection. Not as exaggerated as a barrel leg, but it does offer an interesting silhouette, one that feels sculptural in a more minimalistic way. Again, insanely comfy thanks to the stretchy waistband, and I always feel incredible wearing these. (p.s I just checked and these are now on sale)

A Blazer

Shock horror I know….But I don’t make the rules?! Blazers are my super power, just like when Superman puts his cape on, I’m ready to take on anything if i’m wearing a blazer. I like mine thrifted from the men’s section.

A Structured Bag

Preferably a vintage gem! My hands feel empty without one. It’s the final flourish to any outfit, and no matter how casual I feel, this just elevates everything in a very low lift way. Why a second hand bag drop?

I am a bag lady through and through. As I spoke about here, I have a long standing relationship and pull towards second hand items, one that has strengthened as i’ve gotten older. After owning multiple luxury designer items I purchased new, I’ve also experienced first hand the inconsistency in quality. For various reasons I sold multiple luxury bags and have replaced them with second hand items that I have found to be equal in quality, if not better. I also believe that owning second hand items is the easiest way to add some character into your wardrobe. Even if you do want the latest trending it bag, there are some incredible second hand offerings out there that most likely inspired the newer designs at a better price, that have already proved their longevity.

How will the bag drop work and when does it go live?

As a special thank you to paid subscribers they will get first access to the bags a day before free subscribers/general public. The bag drop will go live on Wednesday 11th February at 10am (PST) for paid subscribers, and 12th February for everyone else. A separate email with the password to shop a day early will be sent out (via substack) to paid subs in order to access the drop early. So I recommend checking your email inbox and the Substack app on the morning we go live to make sure you don’t miss the password. I will also share the password inside our private chat on Substack.

How many bags are in this collection?

There are currently 21 items that will be available in collection 3.

Are there any themes within this collection?

With spring hovering in the distance, it’s still browns, rusts and tan that are working the hardest in my own wardrobe, especially where accessories are concerned. With this collection, I wanted pieces you could use now, but also pick up anytime of the year. There’s a good mix of neutrals because that’s my comfort zone, but as i’ve been experimenting more with color in my own wardrobe, that’s also influenced how i’ve sourced bags for this drop too. When it comes to sourcing I let my gut guide me.

What made you pick these bags?

As I always say - these were bags that I would happily own and want in my personal collection. Pieces that made the edit were a mixture of brands, some designer and more well known and others less recognisable but equally special. I wanted to offer a collection of pieces that could easily sit beside any high end luxury designer without the same price tag. Each one has its own unique patina/example of being loved and used, and that was also important to me—to find pieces that tell a story.

What are the price points of the bags in the second hand bag drop?

Prices will range from $250 - $950.

Can I make an offer on a bag?

No i’m afraid not. A lot of time and effort has gone into curating this edit of bags, some of which are very rare, so all prices are firm and not up for negotiation. All sales are final and returns are not accepted.

Do you ship internationally?

At the moment, we ship within the United States only. Each bag drop is carefully curated and shipped with care, and for now we’re keeping shipping domestic while we refine our process. International shipping is something we’re actively considering for future drops.

Amery Kinto Sandals in Walnut

If there was one color that single handedly increased my wardrobe flexibility in 2025 it was introducing more brown items. Every Time I saw someone wearing these A.EMERY Kinto Flip Flops (specifically in the brown walnut color) I found myself hovering the buy it now button. However, given that they were having a moment, I had a feeling if I held out I could find them second hand. Sure enough I ended up getting them for nearly half price in brand new condition on The Real Real. As someone living in Los Angeles, a flip flop is essential part of my wardrobe. While i’m covered for rubber flip flops, I wanted a pair that felt a bit more substantial, and a little more polished. These have filled that gap beautifully! They are very comfortable, and the brown is such a rich dark shade it can easily pass for black in dim light. They go with absolutely everything and I have worn them a ton (and continue to do so).

Eby Bras

While I continue to harp on about my love for the Eby Sheer Bralette (this new burgundy colorway is stunning) I also have to shout out their relief bra* which has become my preferred t-shirt bra of choice. Eby actually make a t-shirt bra but I prefer the relief bra, as I find it ever so slightly minimises my bust (and it doesn’t add any unnecessary padding). The fact that this bra has no underwire still blows my mind, especially as someone with a D cup. Safe to say, after my no buy the first thing I stocked up on (after being gifted one of the relief bras) was three more! I have yet to find a more comfortable bra.

Vintage Levi’s

If you’re looking for a full round up of my go to vintage Levi’s style’s, you can find that here! Now that i’ve found my go to styles, I can’t go back. Any time I see incredibly high end denim, for the most part it feels like it’s modelling itself on some kind of vintage Levi’s style. I think my favorite’s are probably the 505’s, or 509’s. One of my biggest learnings from 2025 was just how important getting things altered to fit your body (the way you want it) truly is. Nowhere is this truer, than with vintage denim. I’m at a place now where i’d rather save my spend on my wardrobe for things like alterations, whether that’s on pieces I already own, or pieces i’ve found second hand. The jeans above were less than $10 from a local thrift store, which I had altered to fit me to my preferences.

The Horse Clementine Bag

I remember when The Horse Clementine bag* first came out and being incredibly impressed with the design and quality. As someone who already owned a Loewe small Puzzle bag, I still felt this bag could stand on its own. It doesn’t feel like a direct copy, and it has everything I love about the puzzle at a more affordable price point. The leather is incredibly durable and I actually prefer the long strap on the horse compared to the thinner ones Loewe started making on their later versions of the puzzle. Both are stunning bags, but I just love that I don’t have to baby the Horse bag. It’s the perfect everyday carry, and I love that it works well for pretty much any occasion. I have it in the navy colorway with gold hardware.

Vintage Suede Jackets

Despite living somewhere where it rains very little, you’d be surprised how little suede I actually owned in my wardrobe until after my no buy. It was another gap I identified that has been an incredible addition. There’s something about the texture of suede that lends itself so well to an outfit. And given that jackets are basically my love language, I felt the need to add one or two into my wardrobe to mix up my everyday looks. Both pieces were found second hand, and are very lightweight, perfect for LA ‘winter’. The brown one is more of a suede shirt with a boxy oversized feel (I basically just looked for a larger mens size), and the mustard tone one is a little more fitted to the body, so both offer something different within my wardrobe. Jackets are such a great way to ice your cake - throw it over any simple base and it just does all the heavy lifting for you. It’s one of the easiest outfit ‘makers’ in my opinion, and probably explains why it’s my largest category of clothing.

Madewell Denim Bermuda Shorts

Another item that revealed itself as a great addition to my wardrobe in 2025 was longer denim shorts, aka these bermuda shorts. This was another huge unlock, especially when I realized I had shorts, but I was lacking variety. The longer length felt very aligned with my comfort on both a practical level and an emotional one. I adore wearing these in (LA) winter with a sweater and those Kinto flip flops. I wear button ups all the times, and being able to pair them with a longer length denim short felt like the perfect transitional item for when it starts to get too warm to wear a trouser, but perhaps not summery enough for a ‘short’ short.

Aeyde Renee Black Leather Flip Flops

I desperately wanted to love these Aeyde Renee leather Flip Flops and I had very high hopes. There is no denying their beauty, however on me, they are uncomfortable. They never feel that secure when they’re on, and sadly they give me blisters. As a result these haven’t got the wear I hoped they would. When I compare them to the Amery Kinto sandals, there’s no contest! I loved how minimal they looked, the toe was perfection, and when I see them with outfits it makes me sad they didn’t work out because they looked so bloomin good! But I’m just not willing to sacrifice comfort for style, especially when we’re talking about flip flops! For that reason, i’m going to sell these. I’m currently testing out some Tkees leather flip flops* I was gifted and so far these are faring much better! I’ll keep you posted.

Madewell Brown Bowling Bag

I love this bag so much, but for whatever reason, I just don’t find myself reaching for it. Dare I say it, I think it’s actually too minimal for me and my taste. (This is the updated version) Accessories are the icing to my cake, and this bag feels a lot more like cake if i’m being honest. Let me be clear, the build quality, the design and the leather are all fantastic, and I did buy it preloved. But I just have other brown bags I prefer and find myself reaching for instead of this.

After a year long no buy in 2024-2025, followed by a brief return to shopping, I realized I missed the creativity a no buy offered me. I initially thought about doing another no buy, but what I settled on instead was not buying anything new until January 2026 (with the exception of underwear etc).

In many ways it feels like how I shop has gone full circle. I started out as an avid thrifter, and i’ve returned to what I consider a seasoned second hand shopper. I’m still incredibly picky about what I buy (and source) second hand, because I value quality and a wardrobe that isn’t bursting at the seams. For me personally, too many clothes makes it harder to get dressed, not easier.

When I look at most images of myself i’d say at least fifty percent of what i’m wearing is second hand or more, and I feel really good about that.

Having less money to spend on your wardrobe is arguably one of the most common styling constraints, one that proceeds the presumption that personal style can be more challenging. But I would argue if you struggle to put together a look you like with less, good luck trying to make something you love with an infinite budget. More money does not automatically equate to better style. I’m a firm believer that shopping second hand/vintage/preloved etc is an incredible way to build a wardrobe, of at least part of it irrelevant of your budget.

While I’m a diehard second hand shopper, one who takes a considerable amount of joy in it, I appreciate it’s not for everyone. In addition, not everyone has the time or access to shop second hand. Yes, there are infinitely more preloved/second hand sites than ever before, but it’s like hunting for truffles…. you can’t expect to find one every time. Looking for a specific item, in a particular size, color etc doesn’t guarantee you’ll find it. You can’t walk into a thrift store and say ‘i’d like to buy a pair of Madewell jeans in a size 16, in a light wash’ and be guaranteed to walk out with said jeans. Especially if your body doesn’t fit standard sizing, a lot of which isn’t inclusive. By all means you can have the intention of finding something specific, but it doesn’t guarantee you will. Shopping second hand sits outside of instant gratification, and it requires a lot of patience.

Finding consistent gems second hand takes time, and time is arguably a resource that many of us would like more of. When you’re short on time, the idea of heading out to a thrift store to riffle through racks of clothes, most of which don’t fill you with confidence probably isn’t going to be your number one priority, let alone the first place you look for clothes. It’s also the last place you’re likely to look for treasure, unless you genuinely enjoy the chase. The chance of treasure is what gets seasoned thrifters out of bed early to be the first one at an estate sale. It’s the chance you might find a truffle that sees you going back repeatedly to the same thrift stores, just in case. The excitement is what drives you, that and the not knowing what you might find.

Even scrolling The Real Real isn’t a favorite bedtime activity for everyone. It still requires sifting through a lot of noise, and a lot of stuff that you probably aren’t that interested in. Also, having more options at your disposal via the likes of eBay or a global second hand market place online can also feel overwhelming and like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Being able to recognise a piece that is past season, or a rare/hard to come by item requires a lot of knowledge, especially if resale value is important to you. (Of course we also buy pieces because of our emotional pull towards them, and that is a valid reason to add to cart. Not every purchase we make is purely based on function and necessity.)

Is second hand still the best way to get more bang for your buck?

The short answer is yes, majority of the time.

First if all I want to speak to the items in a closet that actually look better with age and patina, the most obvious one is bags, and leather goods. The oldest items in my wardrobe are without a doubt my bags. I own bags that are over forty years old that I think look better now than when they were first made.

By shopping second hand you already have a one of a kind item to some extent, even if the item isn’t that old, because of the fact it’s already been used and worn. How a sleeve folds or a bag creases will be unique to your particular second hand item, even if more than one of them exist.

I’ve started receiving inventory for the next second hand bag drop (Collection III), and it always blows my mind how many contemporary designer bags mark an uncanny resemblance to past designs. In a world where a luxury designer bag can cost upwards of five figures, second hand is still your best bet to find something high quality, with a timeless design, at a better price. While i’ve sold quite a few of my designer handbags, I would guess I purchased three quarters of what was my original collection second hand, most of which were purchased for less than half the retail price.

I also find more now than ever if someone asks what to gift me, I ask for a second hand item. Me and Dave set a $50 gift limit for each other this year, which meant I was able to enjoy a pair of Vintage Levi’s for $20 from eBay, and a sterling silver hampshire style bracelet from Poshmark for $27. Both items I will treasure but I also love that they already have a history. I love that they’ve been part of someone else’s story and now they get to be part of mine.

When is it best to buy new?

I think most of us can relate to seeing an item we like online and noticing it sell out quickly, or that the size you want is permanently out of stock. Fomo feels inevitable. This is when I have to get really honest with myself….do I just want this because I can’t have it, or is this genuinely something that would add to my existing wardrobe? There are pieces I’ve bought new in this situation that i’m glad I did buy when I had the chance. My Toteme Denim jacket was a piece I purchased on a visit to New York where the size I wanted had been consistently out of stock, and I’d had no luck on the second hand market. I visited the Toteme store at the beginning of my trip telling them how much I loved that piece, and they took my number and said they’d let me know if a shipment came in before my trip ended. On the second to last day, I got the call one had come in, and you best believe I made it mine. Yes, I would have happily continued to hold out for it on the second hand market had it not have come back in, but given the chance, I took it as a sign and a wonderful memento of a very special trip.

And on the flip side of that, there’s also been pieces I lusted after that passed me buy due to my budget (or lack thereof), or availability that found me many years later second hand. My (old) Celine loafers and sunglasses were both items I wanted so badly, but definitely couldn’t afford in my late twenties/early thirties. The irony was not only did I find them years later when no one else wanted them, I also got both at a ridiculously good price. I treasure both.

What about hygiene? Everyone has different comfort levels when it comes to how they shop for specific categories of clothing. One category in particular i’d rather buy new is underwear (These are my fave for comfy bras), pyjamas (obsessed with this nightdress) and gym wear. That’s just me, but you do you.

I also think if you’re going through body changes, it makes sense they’ll be times when you want to find a pair of trousers/top/dress etc to see you through. You deserve to be comfortable right now. Be gentle with yourself.

What about sustainability?

If you want more character in your wardrobe, and a sprinkling of individuality I do think shopping second hand is one of the easiest ways to do this. Whether you’re looking for luxury preloved, vintage items or second hand versions of items already on the market today, it is undoubtedly a more sustainable way to shop.

But a word of caution here (this is for me more than anyone else) just because it’s a great deal, and it’s a more sustainable option doesn’t mean it needs to come home with you. I recently did a wardrobe clear out and I could very quickly identify the items (previous to my first no buy) that I had bought just because it was ten dollars at a thrift store. Sometimes the deal is more exciting than the actual item, but don’t confuse someone else’s treasure with your own. That great deal deserves a good home, but it doesn’t have to be yours.

My ultimate goal is to make sure I wear the clothes I own, whether they are purchased second hand or new.

My wardrobe clearout also helped me identify the pieces that need upgrading. For example my H&M drawstring black pants are one of my top five most worn items according to my data. I loved the fit so much that I went on to buy three more pairs. However, they are a polyester linen blend and they do make me sweaty, plus two pairs have a hole in now. The amount I spent on buying multiples could have been spent buying the same style garment in a better quality fabric. We live we learn.

What this also teaches me is that sometimes it is helpful to buy an item new in order to learn my sizing in a particular brand (especially if they’re online only) in order to know what size to look for second hand online. That and knowing your measurements, especially when it comes to vintage items.

I think it’s fair to say my default will always be to try and shop second hand where possible (and as a first resort) but also…. because it brings me a lot of joy. I also know that new pieces will come into my wardrobe, and as long as I wear the hell out of them, I’m totally ok with that. Let me know if you’ve had any great second hand finds recently?

It’s fair to say me and denim have been on quite the journey. At this point I feel like frickin Goldilocks when it comes to finding the perfect pair of jeans: too big, too small, not to mention the ones that I couldn’t sit down in. I honestly thought I’d given up on being able to wear vintage denim, that was until I visited The Consistency Project and was able to try on a shed load of Vintage Levi’s that actually fit me. (Safe to say I opened pandora’s box and now there’s no going back.) Since then I’ve found more Vintage Levi’s I love (some for less than $10). Some pairs i’ve had tailored and some I wear as is, but i’ll break down those alterations as well as other helpful considerations for choosing your perfect fit. For reference my body is a size 14/16 UK, 12 US but I definitely fluctuate. I’m also just shy of 5ft6.

That’s the first point that’s important to call out when it comes to vintage denim, you pretty much have to forget your standard size. I had been getting the sizing way off, and what I understand now is I was looking at both the wrong styles and the wrong size in order to get the fit (and look) I wanted. After testing a shed load of Vintage Levi’s, I feel like I’ve found the best four styles for curvy women, and I’ve done a full comparison below.
