However, I live in Los Angeles, which while i’m very grateful, means I generally spend more of the year than less dressing for warmer weather. And if i’m truly honest, for more seasons past than I care to remember i’ve struggled to love my spring summer outfits. I’ve liked them sure, but i’d be lying if I said I love them. So to remedy this, in a way that respects my vulnerabilities without letting them take the wheel, I want to share with you what’s been working for me.

1. Keeping the silhouette, but changing up the fabric

You all know how much I love my Boiled Wool Lantern pants by Eileen Fisher. The fact that these come in multiple fabrics, including (but not limited to) linen, makes me so happy! (Shop the pants here). I still have the sculptural shape, and the silhouette I know and love, but in a much lighter fabric. I’m sorry, but I love a trouser, and if I want to feel like myself I need them in Spring/Summer just as much as I do in the fall winter months. Seeing only shorts in my wardrobe sends my brain into a mad panic. My no buy helped me realize I was seriously lacking in the linen pant department, and now not only do I have a good variation of linen pants to choose from, but I also have two pairs that offer the sculptural shape I love, that the lantern pant offers so well.

2. I’ve stopped abandoning my preferred color palette

In other words, I have to embrace that for whatever reason I just lean into neutrals even more in the warmer months, specifically - black. I’m still committed to experimenting with color when it feels right for me and my wardrobe, but I just love wearing black in the spring summer months.

I find black and brown linen especially chic in the warmer months, and I need to own that rather than keep apologizing for it. The key to making black feel summery depends on what you pair it with (remember context matters). When I pair a black linen shirt and shorts with a basket bag, or a woven leather bag it instantly reads more summery. Jewelry with wooden beads, or some kind of cord necklace with a ceramic pendant lifts the black, especially when the colors or textures add some contrast.

3. Build outfits around shape, not items

Interesting proportions can be achieved many ways. I think the key is thinking about the kinds of shapes you want to achieve. I’m naturally drawn to sculptural shapes (explains why I love a shoulder pad and the lantern pant) so in summer I need fabrics that can create this via cut, or in how they move. Movement and fluidity is not to be underestimated as a tool to creating interest in an outfit. One thing that had been on my wishlist for a while was a black linen A Line dress because of the shape it offers. And as someone who naturally defaults to a crew neck, the v neck on this dress adds something different to my spring summer wardrobe.

4. Strategic layering

One of the things I struggled with the most in the past was layering in summer. She loves a layer! Experimenting with mixing different weights of linen and varying degrees of transparency has also helped me add interest without having to reinvent the wheel. Exploring different weights and textures also changes how fabric drapes the body, which in itself creates interesting shape via movement. When the weather gets warmer, try layering with a scarf around the waist, or a shirt undone instead of a jacket.

I also like my linen lived in and appreciate the texture that’s created when linen creases. It makes everything feel that little bit more effortless and easy going, but still elegant. And i’ve come to realize I need the duality of both effortless and elegance to feel like myself.

5. Repeat outfits on purpose

When you make an outfit you feel incredible in, wear it. Wear it often! To make outfit repeating effortless I rely on creating a few simple bases in my Indyx app that I can easily duplicate and just switch out the accessories or one item to make the same look feel new even if it isn’t. Here i’m using the linen lantern pant* and a white tee as the base, and then creating more looks with this as a starting point.

6. Add your ‘cherry’ on top

Adding a ‘final flourish’ is one of the easiest ways to make your go to outfits feel fresh and new. This cord necklace has been working overtime in my SS wardrobe, especially with my all black linen looks. And it doesn’t have to be a piece of jewelry. Maybe it’s a structured bag, or something that adds a pop of color without overwhelming the outfit. This has been the key for me: finding something that adds to an outfit without having to overthink it. I think we’ve been taught to fear being ‘too basic’ when it comes to summer dressing, but I would argue well cut, high quality, timeless pieces can still hold their own. The addition of an accessory is less about leading an outfit, and more so finishing it. As I always say, you have to bake the cake before you can ice it. The cherry on the cake isn’t always the show stopper, but it does singal the cake is complete.

Thanks to the high shine of the hand blown venetian glass, and the whimsical nod via the freshwater pearl, the pendant adds the perfect finishing touch. It doesn’t overwhelm the look. It doesn’t take away from the cut of the fabric but it does help complete things. It compliments the look. I’m also loving the addition of a large moc croc leather tote to offer some contrast (and lend an unexpected texture) while keeping the look monochromatic.

Stylistically, i’m optimistic about the season ahead. I’m approaching it with curiosity, and a sense of relief. Relief that I can still wear black, I can still layer and most importantly: I know how to feel like myself in my clothes no matter the season.

With temperatures soaring this week in Los Angeles, I’ve felt like a bear who’s awoken from hibernation early. But instead of the cold, i’ve been greeted with scorching temperatures and the need for an impromptu wardrobe switch over. I try to put it off as long as I can, but I don’t think i’ve yet to make it past April.

If i’m honest with myself, I’ve felt a lot of resistance this year. Once I’d completed the switch over I sat there, feeling a little discombobulated. In truth I don’t feel ready for it to be summer yet, as I don’t feel i’ve had enough of spring. And while a part of me wants to add some disclaimer about this being small potatoes in the grand scheme of things, another part wants to confront the resistance and what it represents.

I don’t want to reveal my body just yet, and I feel a little vulnerable.

It’s highlighted that I still find summer a difficult season to dress for, especial as someone who loves to layer (and wear black). Few brands showcase their looks on larger bodies, so more times than not a piece i’ve ordered arrives, and surprise surprise it looks wildly different on my body than it does on the models.

I’m also turning forty this year, which in itself is a huge privilege, and something I really don’t want to make a big deal about, and yet, it is a big deal. I will have been on planet earth for forty years!!!! Society has trained me to fear the numbers getting larger, whether that’s on the scale, or the age on my passport. And I feel like i’m fighting the good fight….one that’s equally exhausting and rewarding.

However, I’m determined to become a summer girl!

I don’t want to be that person who always complains about the heat (seriously my parents have threatened to remove me from the group chat any time I complain about it being ‘too hot’, meanwhile they’ve spent the most part of this year with rain and grey skies).

In order to become a summer girl, I need to apply a new lens to look at my summer wardrobe, and get creative using what I have. I want to spend some time seriously thinking about what I have, how to style it, and what would make things easier/what’s not working (if anything) in order to feel excited again.

I want to address my vulnerabilities, and give them room to breath, without letting them take the driving seat in how I get dressed. My aim is to make at least 10 outfits I can easily repeat for this warm weather. Let’s play….

Outfit 1

I always start a wardrobe playdate by scanning my wardrobe and observing what I naturally gravitate to. Usually one or two items, a shape, or a color combination I want to try. The first thing I realised is I don’t feel super comfortable wearing a tank top right now, and rather than force it, I decided on a cotton tee.

I went with these LeSet shorts* (not sure if this color is out of stock or discontinued but it’s still available in other colors), this navy tee* and paired it with some vintage accessories. The cream with the navy compliment each other beautifully, and when it came to accessories I opted for brown with gold accents. The brown structured ladylike bag added some nice contrast against the more fluid fabrics, and my vintage French Sole brown nubuck ballet pumps felt like a nice alternative to my usual leather flip flops. Outfit 2

I realised when I was putting the navy and cream outfit together, that I seemed to have accidentally subscribed to this idea of ‘winter colors’ not being allowed in the warmer months. Now as someone who wears a lot of black in the summer, it felt like quite the epiphany to realize i’d been disregarding certain colors for SS, in particularly navy and burgundy because my brain associated them with fall/winter.

The burgundy linen shirt is a piece i’ve had for years, and nearly got rid of multiple times. Why oh why had I not thought to put this look together before? The cream and burgundy oozes of raspberry ripple goodness. It’s funny how even when you think you don’t subscribe to styling rules, some slip through subconsciously. Anchored with some black accessories, I love this look and cannot wait to wear it.

Outfit 3

With the huge aha that I missed wearing Burgundy and my favorite fall colors in the warmer months, came more ideas. I found myself thinking how could I add in a playful element to a base I always wear (the Tee and the shorts)? I wanted to play with more burgundy and merlot tones against the cream, but I also wanted to bring black into the mix, because yes, I do wear it year round.

The hero piece: another structured vintage bag. My beloved Bally burgundy top handle inspired me to add in a touch more burgundy. I could have painted my nails, gone with this liquid eyeliner, but instead I remembered my DIY cord necklace I made in a previous wardrobe playdate using an old earring. Voila… I really loved this!

Outfit 4

The palette cleanser. I’ve worn variations of this look before, but I felt it deserves some space to be celebrated for its simplicity. I didn’t realize how much my wardrobe would benefit from having a pair of skin tone flip flops until I got these from Tkees.* I nearly always default to black or brown, but with a white trouser I love how my foot sort of disappeared. Some bold, sculptural jewelry which mirrored the sculptural shape of my Toteme T Lock bag helped pull the look together. It was the final flourish to take it from pyjamas to intentional outfit.

Outfit 5

A curve ball to follow the palette cleanser. I found this 100% linen top/dress? in a thrift store for $5 last weekend, and bought it thinking it would be a great beach cover up, or something to wear at home when i’m gardening. I was curious to see if I could make it feel like a ‘me’ outfit, and while i’m not exactly obsessed with it (yet…sometimes it takes time) I do like the vibe with my mums 90’s Prada mules and a small woven bag. I have to say, I do really like the white shoe with the white dress. And in case you're wondering, yes - I am wearing some short white shorts underneath for fear of revealing my arse!

Outfit 6

I found myself pulled back to blue, especially denim blue. Something about denim blue and the cream kept speaking to me. When it comes to Spring/summer, I think the amount of button ups I own is close to the number of blazers, which makes sense given they can act as a layer during the warmer months. But I also like wearing them with a short. I liked this but need to sleep on it. I think i’d prefer it if the shirt had been more oversized.

Outfit 7

Knowing I felt strongly about the denim blue, I looked for other options that could pair with the LeSet shorts. I’ve had this sleeveless button up from The Frankie Shop for years and it’s still brings me a lot of joy. It’s a piece that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and the collar actually gives you multiple ways to style it. It was the play on proportion that drew me to this, especially with the shirt open at the top. The addition of the tan woven basket feels complementary to the denim blue in the shirt. I paired it with an old pair of By Far tanya heels, but this could easily work with flip flops too.

Outfit 8

And some point I realised, wait…why don’t you just try this with an actual denim shirt? I grabbed my vintage Ralph Lauren button up, and had a play with different tucks and sleeve rolls. It’s so tempting to add a leather flip flop to every SS look because it just works, but I still think a pump brings something a little unexpected to the table.

Outfit 9

It’s no secret i’ve been borderline obsessed with my vintage Eileen Fisher silk jacket since it arrived from Poshmark, and while it’s had a ton of wear with my vintage Levi’s, I wanted to try it with the shorts. They’re not quite an exact color match, but I still love how these looked together, especially with the Chanel slingback pumps. It’s outfits like this that really make me want to buy the Porto Pouch in Black (I have it in white), as a cute evening bag to add contrast to lighter outfits.

And one final outfit palette cleanser. Simple, easy and a great warm weather base.

Takeaways from this Wardrobe Playdate

1. While I don’t necessarily subscribe to strict styling rules, I do think when you feel lost there’s something to be said for choosing three colors and working within that palette, at least as a starting point.

2. It’s ok if you don’t want to wear a tank top. Shaming yourself for not feeling body neutral or body positive doesn’t help you get there. (Note to self)

3. Sometimes all it takes is one hero base item to do all the leg work, for me that has proved to be these LeSet shorts.

4. Don’t save certain colors for specific seasons. Wear them when YOU want, not when fashion tells you to.

5. Getting dressed is still one of my favorite ways to come back to myself, to clear my mind and reconnect with my creativity, and I am forever grateful for that.

1. Tortoise Shell fountain pens! I have been lusting after a tortoise shell pen for some time now, but like all good stationery collectors I have a budget in mind. The hunt continues!

2. This linen dress from Massimo Dutti in Rust. Very, VERY tempted to purchase this, plus I love the styling.

1. Context matters

I’ve been thinking about this a lot recently, especially when it comes to those purchases we’re a little on the fence about but can’t seem to walk away from. When you see an item while shopping, whether that’s on a shelf at the thrift store, online, or hanging on a lonely hanger in a designer boutique, context matters. Similar to what I wrote here, how you see an item, and how you experience it in your day to day life within the context of your existing wardrobe is a deciding factor. When we see a beautiful item, we go all googly eyed, only to get it home and realize wait, WTF am I gonna wear this with? The same is true about those pieces that you think to yourself, this is weird, this is odd, but nonetheless, something is there.

The context in terms of how you style a piece can totally transform its appeal. For example, I bought a silk shirt/jacket recently from Poshmark, and when I showed my husband the image he made a face (you know the one). He didn’t get it. First of all, that’s ok. I didn’t need him to like it in order for me to enjoy it, and second, I also knew he couldn’t see the context in which I would wear it. Sure he might still not have gotten it after it had arrived, been steamed and styled to my taste, but sure enough, when I wore it out to meet a friend he commented on my beautiful jacket and how nice I looked. Being the smug twat that I am, I couldn’t help but remind him twas the same jacket he wasn’t sure about when I showed him online days earlier.

2. I’m not put off by ‘bad’ photos

This is another reason why shopping second hand online is tricky to navigate for some. When you see an item unlovingly and haphazardly shoved on an ill fitting hanger, that hasn’t been steamed/hasn’t been stuffed, it makes sense your first instinct is to pass, but being able to read a badly taken photo is a skill you can learn. Ask questions, use Google image search to see if you can find additional photos of the item being worn, or how it looks when it has been cared for. Spend some time considering the potential. Yes you might have to get a handle replaced on a bag, or hem a pair of pants that looked shorter online, but don’t discount a great item just because of how it was shot. Look at the fabric composition, research the brand if you haven’t heard of them. Your wardrobe, and your wallet will thank you for it. Bad photos can be a blessing and a curse, not everything you buy will be the gem you hoped it would be, but then some treasures shine much brighter IRL.

3. I focus on the fit I want, not the size

I know this is old news at this point, but it’s taken me forty years to truly comprehend that knowing my measurements is far more helpful than knowing my size. Not only will it help you shop smarter online, when you can’t try clothing on in person, but it also removes some of levity we place on sizing. And generally speaking, what seals the deal for me is always the fit. It’s normal for me to buy trousers one to two sizes bigger in order to get the fit I want, versus the fit i’m being marketed to want. Shopping for the fit you want is another way to add some personality to your closet, and the easiest way to create interesting proportions. Now that i’m also on first name terms with my local seamstress, I have a better understanding of what can and can’t be done to garments. This alone has changed how I shop, especially with regards to vintage Levi’s. For thirty bucks she can take in the waist and the butt ensuring I have the perfect pair of jeans I want every time. Considering a lot of pairs were thrifted for less than $15, i’m still coming in at around about $45 for a custom pair of jeans made to fit my body, versus trying to squeeze myself into a size that isn’t comfortable.

4. I factor in practicality & comfort most of the time, but I also don’t save things for best

With the odd exception (hello ‘dinner shoes’) I want to wear the things I own. That means I have to get honest with myself about the day to day scenarios I need to dress for, and where I live. I always say, my main goal is to wear the hell out of my clothes, and in order to do that, they need to work with me, not against me. I want comfort and style - and I believe that for the most part I get to have both. Living somewhere warm most of the time means buying thick wool coats (plural) just doesn’t make sense at this point of my life. I’m also ok with the fact that I probably own a lot more leather flip flops and sunglasses than most people. That being said, I also think one of the reasons I’m good at wearing the majority of my wardrobe is because I don’t save things for best. I’m happy being ‘overdressed’ if that’s how it comes across to others, and I try not to seperate my wardrobe into formal or informal wear, because again ‘context matters’. A white tee can be both informal and more formal depending on what you pair it with.

5. Can I afford it?

Look, i’m no saint, but it is an important question. No one needs to go into debt to look good, myself included! Some items in my wardrobe I had to save up for a long (long, long) time, and in many ways the longing for them was part of what made it so special when I did get them. We need to normalize this. There are also pieces i’d rather find a cheaper alternative for. I have written how I (generally) prioritize my spend when it comes to my wardrobe but I can’t lie and say that how much an item costs doesn’t factor into my decision making. It does. It’s another reason why I’m a big second hand shopper because i’m able to buy a lot of higher quality items at a better price point. We each have our own understanding of what quality means, and how much we are willing to part with for a particular item. My interpretation of quality is rooted in longevity, and something that’s well made, which more often than not isn’t always reflective of the price tag. Building a wardrobe you love isn’t a quick fix, and it isn’t something you have to rush.

When we start outsourcing our decisions to trends, algorithms, and other people’s certainty, it’s a sign that our ‘trust the vision’ muscles are weak, and in need of strengthening. No matter how dormant you might think that muscle (or lack thereof) is, I want to assure you it can be built.

One of the most important styling muscles I believe you can build is the ‘trust the vision’ muscle. That little voice that says… you like this, there’s something here, even if it doesn’t make sense alone, or in the context you’re seeing it for the first time.’

We all have those moments where we just need to phone a friend, especially when we second guess ourselves over something we like. ‘Am I mad for liking this? Why do I like this? Is it just a good deal? Is it just because it’s trending/everyone is talking about it? Or is it a problem if no one else is talking about it/it’s not trending?’

Those have been questions I found myself asking recently over a few new items I was debating adding into my wardrobe. Logically I know the answer, I get to wear whatever the hell I want and so do you you, but what about those moments when you enter a negotiation with yourself, a discourse where by you try to determine if you are indeed crazy for liking something? It’s the moment when your self trust wavers.

More times than not the assumption is that if it isn’t a solid, indisputable yes, it’s a no. We should walk away. But what if we’ve got that wrong to some extent? I would argue there are indeed certain items (and certain circumstances) that warrant vision, based on the emotional pull of an item that in many other cases might not make sense?

Now that (overtime) I have built what I consider a hard working wardrobe, I’ve also built trust with myself regarding my personal style. My gaps (for the most part) are filled. I have a lot of flexibility to both create and feel comfortable. What this has created is space for the items that were meant to find me. Items that rely on vision, and an indescribable feeling that comes from my gut.

It’s not that i’m convincing myself to like something, it’s more that I really truly do like it, but within the context of an idea, or more specifically, the vision. For example…

I was enjoying an afternoon of thrifting on Sunday, when several opportunities (shown above) presented themselves. Three candidates in particular were suddenly in consideration to become part of my wardrobe. A pair of men’s black Prada loafers, a brown pair of Louis Vuitton buckled boots and what I presumed were three small silver rings.

I could have very easily relied on logic for each item, and leant into practicality. The loafers and the boots were a flat/low heel, the leather had already worn beautifully and would continue to patina. The rings if they were silver were just like some Agmes pieces I had saved on my wishlist. But that wasn’t the thinking I undertook - when I looked at each item, instead of seeing it in it’s singularity, I saw it as a vision:

The Prada loafers had me conjuring up looks with a classic tee, vintage Levi’s and a trench or chunky cable knit sweater. I loved the idea of the clunky masculine school shoe against a ladylike structured bag. I saw socks, I saw jeans turned up and oversized button ups. A myriad of options got my brain chemistry firing on all cylinders. In short, I was excited.

But when I tried the loafers on with my barrel legged white jeans, the shoes looked off, and it was here I had to come back to the vision. I had to use my imagination. With no fitting rooms, I couldn’t just go and change into a trouser or jean that fitted my vision. I also didn’t have socks with me. Instead I had to mentally open my wardrobe and think about how they would work and with what. Along with trusting that initial spark of curiosity. The same spark that made me pick up the shoes and not let them out of my sight in the first place.

You’d be forgiven for thinking Harry, surely you only liked them/wanted them when you saw they were Prada? However the branding had mostly rubbed off on the inside sole, and what first caught my eye was the clunky shape and the high shine leather. I could tell it was a very well made shoe. That’s what caused the spark, not the name. It was only when I went to try them on, and looked under the sole that I saw the Prada branding. All it confirmed were that these were indeed a very high quality shoe.

The next item I saw placed behind the cash register which caught my eye, were a pair of brown boots with buckles. Something about them reminded me of nineties Vivienne Westwood pirate boots. The toe was perfection, and chocolate brown boots had also been on my wishlist for a while. Granted these weren’t what I had saved and pinned—I didn’t even know this style existed!? But without knowing anything about them other than they sparked my ‘cabin in the woods’ vision I asked if I could have a closer look and try them on. It was then that I noticed they were by Louis Vuitton. Something about them also felt a little victoriana which intrigued me far more than the brand name. I tried them on and they fit like a glove. Again, I wasn’t wearing anything that resembled my overall vision, so I had to channel my inner ‘Yoda’ once more, and enter my closet in my mind.

In both scenarios the vision was clear and filled me with excitement. I was able to bypass the doubt my current outfit had provided and use my ‘jedi mind tricks’ to honor what I initially saw, and felt. When it comes to styling, we focus a lot on how something looks, but I would argue how it feels is more important. If it doesn’t feel right, (physical comfort and the overall vibe) I won’t wear it. It can look amazing through the lens of fashion, through the lens of what other people label as cool, but if I don’t feel it, then it’s not it.

As someone who sources and sells vintage bags it’s a muscle I rely on heavily, and want to keep in shape. There are times when I find a piece that most other people would pass on, and it’s these pieces that I see a vision, and the bigger picture beyond the item itself. I see how the piece would interact with an outfit, how it integrates into someone’s life, how it would make them feel and how it would strengthen the overall vision. What I can see in my mind is context, and the right context matters.

But I believe it’s a skill we can develop and a muscle we can build. All it really comes down to is self trust. In my next substack i’ll be sharing HOW you learn to trust your own vision, because I feel like that in itself is a seperate piece.

If (like myself) christmas parties lead you to envisage tinsel pom pom headbands, and light up snowman earrings, both of which you’d prefer to pass on, this is the holiday dressing post for you.

No matter what time of year it is, I need to feel like myself. I need to feel like whatever i’m wearing would be something i’d happily outfit repeat for multiple festive occasions, but also wear beyond the holiday season.

I like to think of holiday dressing as the perfect time to revisit my cake and icing analogy. I don’t need to rethink my whole sense of style, more so I just need to rethink how I want to ice my cake. I can use my everyday pieces/basics (my cake) and experiment with icing them (adding interest) in ways that feel fresh (and festive) through a lens that feels true to my personal style. I hope this piece offers up some ideas on how to tweak your go to outfits for the Holiday season (and any other time of year).

A Festive Mood

My first port of call was to think about how I want to feel and what I want to channel. I started by making a moodboard including themes, colors and stylistic concepts that I felt excited to channel into my existing wardrobe. The vibe I wanted was a mix of Grace Jones, Lou Doillon with some soft and sculptural tailoring. I wanted classic with a sprinkle of unexpected elements. The main colors I kept leaning towards were black, grey and white, with accents of red and mixed metals.

After a festive wardrobe playdate with Mariah blasting in the background, I realised I’d created a holiday capsule without even meaning too. I thought about the few scenarios I would need to dress for - some smart casual and one or two verging on fancy. I then selected pieces I could create looks with using the themes in my moodboard, and made a little collection inside my app. The last thing my brain needs at this time of year is over stimulation via too much choice. Creating a mini capsule of holiday looks instantly made the whole process feel like a calming ritual, and one that provided some much needed time for myself. I also think I will always be someone who enjoys some kind of constraint within my wardrobe in order to feel the most creative.

My Holiday Capsule

Here’s what i’m working with:

• Vintage Levi 505s in black (Cake) - These were my latest second hand ebay find and I could not be happier! I know jeans might seem like a curveball (especially for me) but I love the way jeans look with a pointy heel. I also like that it softens a look that could otherwise read too dressy.

• Eileen Fisher Wool Lantern pants in grey* (Cake) - Hello stretchy waistband! I have not stopped wearing these since I got them and i’ve already enjoyed wearing them as part of my cosy festive attire. I love the soft sculptural shape of these, especially with a kitten heel or pump.

• Lizzie Fortunato gold and pearl earrings* (Icing) - I love a pearl, but most of my earrings had been silver until I found these. They look equally great with my hair scraped back, as they do with big bushy, very undone hair.

• Jil Sander white strappy kitten heels (Icing) - These shoes offer something a little quirky, as well as a chance to show some skin in order to break up a column of black (a look I favor throughout the year, but especially for fancy occasions).

• Thrifted mens black blazer (Cake) - Something to create scale, and add a bit of slouch. My answer to soft tailoring.

• Lisa Eldridge Velvet Ribbon (Icing) - Aka one of my go to matte red lipsticks, and the easiest way to ice your cake.

• Vintage Bally Suede and Leather red bag (Icing) - The most incredible party piece (and very rare).

• Agmes large Sandra earrings (Icing) - Bold sculptural silver and pearl earrings that immediately add some playfulness to my more serious tailored looks.

• Manolo Blahnik Callumu mules (Icing) - I have a vintage pair of these and they never let me down. That peep of toe, the kitten heel, they add a feminine touch to my more masculine pieces.

• Aritzia Wilfred Effortless Pants (Cake) - My most worn pant ever? Probably. Which is why it makes so much sense to add them to this capsule.

• Madewell Tuxedo shirt (Icing/Cake) - I actually got this in a clothing swap I went to over a year ago, and I always bring it out for occasions where I want to feel a little fancy, but still me. Especially given that I live in button ups.

• Whitespace Jewelry Bold Continuity Ring in shiny silver* (Icing) - The ring that’s been on my wishlist for over two years! Another low lift way to ice the cake while providing maximum impact.

• Whitespace Jewelry Bold Continuity Ring in matte silver* (Icing)

• Eileen Fisher grey cashmere sweater* (cake) - The softest sweater you ever did feel, and the perfect length for tucking into pants.

• Khaite ponyhair and mesh black heels (Icing) - I’m having a thing for pony hair accessories. The texture adds something unexpected to a classic pump shoe.

The first thing you’ll see is there’s not actually that many items of clothing. Instead, i’m relying on the icing (accessories) to do the heavy lifting. For me, it’s the icing that’s going to add the unexpected elements I want, while my cake comprises of those classic elements I wear all the time - an oversized blazer, a tailored pair of pants, a button up and a cashmere sweater. Things that ground a look in comfort.

The Outfits

I love to outfit repeat, so even creating nine looks feels like quite a lot for me. What I love about these pieces is that i’m able to dress for the temperature. Not all festive occasions are indoors, so it’s nice to be able to choose an outfit based on the temperature in addition to how casual or formal it is.

The key elements

Not all icing is created equally. There are some pieces that just finish an outfit in such an obvious way. From the moment you add them you feel excited. You flirt with yourself in the mirror a little. You indulge in a few selfies, even if it’s just for you to look back at later and think ‘DAMN that was a good look’. If I had to choose the icing that I believe has the biggest impact on a look, especially where holiday dressing is concerned, these would be the party pieces I would prioritize.

A Show Stopping Bag

The holiday season is the perfect excuse to swap out your everyday, large cumbersome tote, for a fun, wild card bag. It’s also one of the few times you genuinely just need the essentials. My go to is either some kind of mini bag or a clutch, but something you can add a strap too is a bonus; especially when you find yourself with a drink in one hand and a canape in the other!

A statement color, a luxe fabric or an interesting shape is a nice way to mix things up and this vintage Bally bag ticks all the boxes. I can’t lie, I’ve thought about keeping this stunning bag for myself, but there’s no room left at the inn! She deserves to go to a good home. The color is a real show stopper, only made more appealing thanks to the hybrid of red suede and red leather. I genuinely think you could wear any outfit, add this and BOOM! All eyes are on you (or at least your bag).

Bold yet minimal jewelry

I am the biggest fan of White Space Jewelry, and consider myself a collector. These Bold Continuity rings in silver (one is shiny and one is matte) have been on my wishlist for over two years, and i’m fairly certain they’re about to become my entire personality for the foreseeable future. Hands are severely underlooked when it comes to ways to ice your cake. There’s something so effortlessly elegant about a pared back look, where the only focal point is the hands.

I’ve always advocated for bold, yet minimal jewelry as a way to add some interest to an otherwise simple outfit, but this festive season my focus will be rings. These pieces almost remind me of armory. The play on metals adds an additional level of interest without stealing the limelight from the bold sculptural shape. I could even imagine one of these on each finger would look super cool, and yet I also love wearing just one on my pointer finger as a cocktail ring with a modern twist. A deep plum on the nails would also add a really nice contrast to the silver.

The Pointy Shoe

A pointy shoe is a classic for a reason and something I always return to (so much so I wrote an entire piece on them). It works with pretty much any outfit and adds a grown up flair. One that’s easy to personalize based on color, height and texture. It was love at first sight when I saw these khaite pony hair pointy heels on TRR for $160 in pristine condition! SCORE!

The pony hair creates the equivalent of a raw hem around the skin which I think is a subtle, yet impactful detail. The mesh provides a provocative element and the overall textures together offer something less obvious. They make you do a double take.

The Red Lip With Frizzy Hair

I love a red lip, especially a matte one. I know I sound like a broken record but makeup really is the easiest and most low lift way to ice your cake. If you’re new to wearing a red lip this one by Violette is the perfect entry level red, but my go to for both comfort, and bold saturated color (that looks good on everyone) is Velvet Ribbon by Lisa Eldridge. My favorite way to offset a bold red lip is with messy, loose hair - the more frizz the better!

Some days I can air dry my hair and it just works the way I want it to, (but when that fails) I loosely curl random sections using something like this, then leave it too cool for at least ten minutes. Once the hair is cool, I tip my head upside down and spray this into the ends and throw my head back. Then I rub my palms over my scalp and the rest of my hair to kick up a mist of frizz. I just love the way this adds a little more texture but in a way that doesn’t look too done.

5 Tips To Keep Holiday Dressing Stress Free

1. Try things on. I know it might seem obvious but try things on in your closet, have a wardrobe playdate and enjoy a festive playlist while you’re at it!

2. Take photos of outfits you love, especially if you don’t use a digital styling tool like Indyx where you can save outfits. Having a bank of looks at your disposal will save time later. (These are some of my favorite ways to use Indyx)

3. Experiment with making your own festive capsule. Choose 15-20 pieces and think about all the looks you could make using those pieces to avoid overwhelm. If you need more creative constraints, experiment with working to a color palette of no more than four colors.

4. Get a fresh set of eyes on your closet. Get a friend round and have them pick out things you might never have thought to put together, or just to highlight the pieces you might have forgotten how much you love/have been saving for a special occasion. The time is now!

5. Prioritize comfort. Above all else don’t sacrifice comfort for style, especially when it is not necessary! When it comes to festive outings, consider the location, the temperature, how many steps you are likely to do (if any)? If you aren’t wearing an elasticated waistband (Godspeed), will you need a top long enough to cover the fly on your jeans when you inevitably have to undo them (after all the wonderful holiday food I so hope you’re about to enjoy)?

I’m a self confessed bag lady, but every now and then a pair of shoes comes along and pulls at my heartstrings. When I want to mix things up in my wardrobe sometimes an unexpected shoe does the trick. The pointy pump to me is the structured bag of the shoe world, and it’s a classic for a reason. Its severity offers an interesting contrast to relaxed layers, rounded shapes, and hems that puddle. They’re actually a lot more versatile than I think most people realize.

I totally appreciate a pointy pump isn’t anything new to write about, but that’s precisely why I want to. I love an almond toe, even a slightly square toe, but I always come back to a pointy shoe. Much like a red lipstick, there are various levels of pointy toe pumps/ways to wear them and I believe there’s a pointy pump for everyone.

While I haven’t reached for them in a while, I never can bring myself to throw out a pair of black suede Maje pumps I bought years ago (similar here). Even if I haven’t worn them in ages, the moment I put them on they make me feel like a grown up, without feeling too ladylike. I think that’s the elephant in the room when it comes to a pointy shoe, they are a lady like shoe, and while there’s no getting around that (and nothing wrong with that), I think how they are styled is key. Growing up my mum always wore a pointy shoe, so I think there’s some nostalgia attached to it for me. It feels like a nod to my favorite fashion memories, and yet it still feels modern.

These Jil Sander merlot pointy pumps have been on my wishlist for a long time, and I’m holding out in the hope I can find them second hand at some point. I personally love a sling back, and what I love about this pair is how high up the leather covers the foot. Plus this color would add a lot to my existing wardrobe, especially against blue denim. So while I haven’t found this exact pair in my size (yet) preloved, I did however find an incredible pair of Khaite pony hair pumps for $160 on TRR in brand new unworn condition. And I am very excited to start putting outfits together the moment they arrive. While I wait with grand anticipation, I thought i’d start planning what i’ll be wearing them with, and share some outfit ideas for how to wear different styles of pointy shoe.

Out of curiosity, I looked at a couple of my recent outfits I’ve worn this month inside my app, and decided to duplicate them changing only the shoe (to my new khaite shoes) to give you an idea of how impactful a pointy shoe truly is. Any of the outfits i’ve worn could very quickly become a holiday look that feels effortless without lacking impact thanks to the addition of the pointy pump.

I think all stylistic choices come down to comfort zone. Both on a practical level and an emotional one. While I can appreciate a sky high super pointy high heel, it just doesn’t fit into my version of comfort. I think 3.5 inches is as high as I can go, and even at that height I consider them dinner shoes. Until my Khaite heels arrive, the only pointy pump I have is the Maje pair. But even owning just one pair of classic pointy pumps demonstrates how versatile they are with any of my go to outfits. Below i’ve shown examples of how i’d wear each style of shoe using what I have in my closet.

How i’d style them

The Classic Pump

This is the shoe I just can’t get rid of (the old Maje ones). The heel height is perfection, around 2 inches, and for a pointy heel I actually prefer a suede or some kind of texture. I love the way black suede feels super saturated, there’s a depth to it that I find hard to get with a smooth leather in black.

The Pointy Slingback

While I don’t own any pointy slingbacks, if money was no object and I could pick one to add to my wardrobe it would be these Jil Sander ones. I love adding items to my wishlist in the Indyx app so I can really gage if an item that’s on my radar would work with my existing closet. These four slingbacks also caught my attention:

The Pointy Kitten Heel

Of all the pointy shoes, the pointy kitten heel is my favorite. It’s a comfort zone bullseye! I would honestly wear any of the four below but if I could pick one, I think The snakeskin Aeyde pair would add something different to my wardrobe that currently doesn’t exist. The pointy kitten heel contenders:

The Pointy Mule

In second place to a kitten heel, i’d choose a mule. The backless option means you have one less place to worry about getting blisters, plus the slip on feel adds a certain nonchalance even if the shoe is dressier. These Jimmy Choo mules add something unexpected thanks to the giant pearl, and I think this would lend itself well to all the baroque earrings I frequently wear. Vintage Levis with a pointy mule, t-shirt and blazer feels very balanced in terms of my personal style. Its the perfect mix of effortless and elegance. In addition to the Jimmy Choo’s, these also caught my eye:

The Exaggerated Pointy Shoe

Ok I have to be honest, with the exception of the Toteme pair I’ve styled above (and maybe the Aedye ones), some shoes are just too pointy (for me and my style). I find the exaggerated styles tend to narrow and elongate a lot more at the toe, making them far less comfortable. For me, the only way I would want to wear them is with a trouser that puddles so you just see the tip of the toe poking through the trouser. The Saint Laurent ones would be the sort of shoe my nieces would have a lot of thoughts about, thoughts I have no doubt they would share. I can hear them now ‘What’s wrong with your shoes auntie Harry?’ I included the Saint Laurent ones below because this to me is as exaggerated as you can get - we’re pretty much in winklepicker territory! But the Toteme ones in the Moc Croc are really speaking to me and my style. Examples of exaggerated pointy shoes:

I think it’s fair to say the ‘Frankie Shop girl’ aesthetic has gotten to the point where it sometimes feels like a fashion meme, and a point of ridicule, however I still love an oversized aesthetic. I did before the Frankie shop Bea blazer existed, and I still love it now.

But I totally understand that a lot of people have the feeling that wearing anything oversized leaves them feeling like they’re wearing a tent, or they look like they’re trying too hard.

For me, it’s always been primarily about comfort. But when I think about it, I can also see that given my past experience with body image, wearing anything oversized feels like somewhat of a rebellion. A rebellion against the societal expectation that as a woman I should be smaller, that I should take up less space, and spend my energy shrinking myself. That’s why the term flattering has always made me feel uneasy because it does feel like code for ‘makes you look thinner’. And it’s here I need to point out, if you want to wear clothes that are flattering, that’s totally ok too. But for me I had to redefine my idea of flattering, what I want it to represent and who it is for that I get dressed. Spoiler, its for me.

I have no doubt many people consider anything oversized ‘unflattering’ but I have come to see it as the opposite (within my own definition) and as I noted earlier, it’s so darn comfy!

Categorizing the oversized items in my own closet

Just like everyone has their own interpretation of what constitutes ‘natural’ makeup, it varies, so does what each person will consider ‘oversized’. I see it as a spectrum that ranges from boxy/slightly oversized fits all the way up more dramatic oversized fits (but there’s also a lot of space in between). The trick is to explore where you feel comfortable. It might be as simple as buying a regular item one size up from what you usually go for. This can also act as a bridge to exploring even larger, more dramatically oversized items.

First of all, what do you put underneath?

When I’m getting dressed I always start with premade bases I have saved inside my app. So lets start first of all with the bases in heavy rotation that I like to pair with my oversized items. The first thing you’ll notice is they are relatively simple. This allows the shape and size of an oversized item to lead the outfit. I do experiment with dresses and shorts from time to time, but the above bases are my comfort zone. Using the above I’m going to walk you through my thought process, starting with the boxy/slightly oversized items first, and work my way up to the more dramatically oversized items.

Styling oversized pieces

Starting with a classic black blazer feels like a great way to kick things off. I buy majority of my blazers thrifted from the mens department. If you don’t want an oversized blazer to read too oversized try wearing it with a matching color sweater underneath to help absorb some of the oversized shape. A turtle neck also helps balance the shoulders. This way the oversized blazer blends in a little more. Wearing this with a darker wash of denim gives the overall feel one that is tailored with just a hint of slouch, and the open toe shoe with a pop of skin adds a nice contrast. I also think this would look great with Converse or Boots.

The vests in my own closet

As someone who loves tailoring, especially a blazer, a sleeveless blazer/vest offers a lot of flexibility in how I style the existing pieces in my closet year round. I’ve tried to show examples of outfits I regularly outfit repeat throughout the year, so that wherever you live (and no matter the current temps) hopefully there’s an outfit here to spark some experimentation and demystify how to style one in a way that feels authentic to you.

My (DREAM) vest wishlist

It goes without saying I have enough to work with given the vests I already have within my wardrobe, but if money were no object, I wouldn’t say no to any of the above, especially that brown Bottega and the denim Blaze Milano ones. I view vests in the same vein as blazers, I just find them so versatile and easy to style. While I’ll definitely be looking for second hand versions or ‘inspired by’ thrifted versions of the above, I consider vests as outerwear — which is a category within my closet I feel more comfortable to prioritize my spend. They rarely, if ever need washing/dry cleaning, and as shown in the styling references can work for any occasion, both casual and formal.

Outfit ideas & how I style them

Look 1 - As we approach cooler temperatures in LA, I find myself reaching for a vest instead of a coat. A vest is nothing if not the most wonderful layering piece. It’s no secret I wear a lot of black, and using a vest in a contrasting color helps break up an all black ensemble. Notice the addition of a gladiator sandal stops the outfit reading too formal, but I could switch them out for boots if it was too cold for open toe.

I find a little at home handbag spa very therapeutic, both for me and my bags!

So instead of having to do all the research yourself, I’ve done it for you! In this piece i’m going to share the products I use and the techniques to care for my bags. This includes links to everything I use, before and after photos as well as mini video tutorials. *Note i’m not an expert, and I still recommend checking with the brand of bag you’re working on where possible/make sure you try a test area on a bag before doing the whole thing.

I’ve been a paid subscriber to the styling app for over a year now, and it’s safe to say it’s become one of my favorite styling tools. A tool that helps me get the most out of my existing wardrobe, while offering the analytics, inspiration, and organisation I want from a styling app.

Before I joined Indyx I had used both Stylebook App and Wearing. I enjoyed both, but neither had the functionality I wanted to the degree Indyx has. That being said, because of the fact I had already uploaded my wardrobe onto these apps, adding everything into Indyx was a lot quicker. I totally get that this step of uploading your wardrobe is what puts some people off, and not everyone wants wardrobe data, but for me there’s just something inherently pleasing about spending time on this app. It feels like i’m playing in Cher’s closet in Clueless — it’s basically play time for grown ups who love getting dressed! (Add a glass of wine and it’s my equivalent of ’s genius at home turn down service).

I like to think of Indyx as my own personal shop, a place where I can peruse at leisure, spend however long I want in the changing room and design everything to my own taste. Here are some my favorite ways I like to use the app:

To check I don’t have something similar before adding to my closet

After finishing a year long no buy, one of the things I wanted to make sure I stay cognizant of is what’s coming into my wardrobe, and this process is one of my favorite ways to do that. The amount of times I do this only to realize I already have something similar has already paid for the cost of the membership and some!

1. To do this, I start by clicking on ‘Items’ and then typing into the search bar the category I want to cross reference. For example, sometimes I might just type in tops, other times I might get more specific and search for ‘Shirts’. Then I can see all the items in the category to check if I have something similar before shopping/adding anything new into the mix. If I want to speed up the process/refine the search even further, I’ll go to the three horizontal lines in the right hand corner which gives more options.

2. For example, in image two, you can see I can then refine by ‘Color’, so if I want to see all my black tops, I don’t have to look through every single top in that category.

3. Once I can see all the black tops, I can also add in any additional filters/change the existing filter by going back to the three horizontal lines again in the top right hand corner.

To increase the wear of my least worn items

One of my personal style goals is to wear the hell out of my wardrobe (all of it) and one of the easiest ways to do this is to look at my ‘least worn items’ in order to bring them back into rotation. The more we own, the harder it is to give every item in our closet it’s moment to shine. When I was trying to decide on what shoes to wear for my upcoming trip to England, I checked my least worn shoes first. In addition to bringing two pairs that I have no doubt would be in the ‘most worn category’, I was able to pack a pair of shoes that I love deeply but haven’t been reaching for. This also helps me repeatedly fall back in love with the entirety of my closet.

1. To find your least worn items click on the three vertical lines that look like a block graph in the top right hand corner.

2. Then click on ‘Usage’.

3. Scroll down until you see ‘Least worn items’. From here you can select a particular category (I chose ‘shoes’) and if you want to you can also select the timeline, eg one year, six months etc. This way I could see my Jack Erwin suede pumps would be a great addition to my England packing list. (And I can confirm they really have)

Clothing tips I swear by:

• For long haul flights I don’t wear white (especially trousers) just trust me, with food on trays, turbulence and the limited space, accidents happen… especially on a plane. Stick to prints or a deeper tone as it’s way more forgiving should you accidentally spill your tomato pasta down your lap. Ask me how I know?!

• No jeans, your girl needs an elastic waistband if i’m sitting down for eleven hours.

• Natural fibres only, i’m a very sweaty person so for long haul, this is a non negotiable.

• I always pack fluffy slipper socks that I put on as soon as they switch off the seatbelt sign, irrelevant of what footwear i’m wearing for travel. And before you start to worry about the dreaded plane toilet scenario, rest assured — I have a ziplock bag that I pack these into inside my hand luggage. Then when I land said socks are immediately replaced in their zip lock and immediately into the washing machine on arrival!

• No underwired bras! Either take it off before you board or wear a bralette.

• I always pack my ‘personal item bag’ inside my trusty Calpak tote so I can sneak more bags into my packing. You should know my now bags are my weak spot.

• No dangly earrings, my Mejuri small bold hoops are what I wear no matter what i’m wearing, they add a little something, a classic feel, but I can still sleep.

Outfit 1 - The all black look

An all black look is eternally chic imo, but there’s something so easy about it for long haul travel. I think the key to wearing all black is to play with texture. In this outfit the soft cosy cashmere scarf adds a nice contrast with the shine on the moc croc gladiator sandals. The Calpak bag also has a little sheen to it that when paired with everything else stops this outfit reading flat. If i’m wearing all black, I can rely on a little jewellry detail to lift the outfit and inject some fun into an otherwise serious looking outfit. I mean, this look is really one step away from pyjamas and a blanket, but I still feel fancy when I put this ensemble together.

My Goal when it comes to any seasonal game plan for my wardrobe is not only to make outfits I love and feel excited to wear, but also to utilize my wardrobe to its full potential. I put aside some time for a little wardrobe playdate this weekend, and using these exact steps came up with several outfits I can’t wait to wear!

Step 1 - Analyze & ask questions

Stand in front of your closet and ask yourself:

• What’s the mood(s) you want to evoke this fall?

• What color palettes do you want to work with/what colors are speaking to me?

• What fabrics/textures do you want to experiment with?

• What items are new in/the newest in your wardrobe?

• Separate cake and icing you haven’t worn in a while but feel excited to reconnect with.

• What were the hero pieces that worked really hard for you last fall?

If you want you can make a little moodboard, whether that’s in canva, pinterest, inside (digital styling app) like I have above, or in a journal inspired by these questions.

I like to start by accessing what’s new in, followed by the pieces that have just come out of storage that I intuitively gravitate towards. I also like to make a mental note of the pieces that I want to increase the usage of, or perhaps pieces that I haven’t reached for as much but I know I don’t want to part ways with. This way I become conscious of bringing them to the forefront of my wardrobe. So using my own wardrobe as an example, this is what i’m working with:

The new in/newer items

Thanks to my year long no buy I was able to identify the actual gaps in my wardrobe using data. I had so few brown pieces, yet the pieces I did own I wore a ton, so it’s been incredibly helpful to have a few more, both clothing and accessories to work with. I’m also only shopping second hand for the time being, but there were a few gifted items i’m also very excited to style this fall.

The old faithfuls

I mean, you knew the Aritzia Effortless Pants would be in here right?! These are the pieces that I don’t really need data to confirm how hard they work for me, because I know it in my bones. If I open up my camera roll, or any substack from AW, these are the pieces you will have already seen me wear a ton. These are the real work horses in my wardrobe. I nearly added boots, but i’m holding out for it too be a little cooler before I commit to adding boots into the mix. (I should also point out here I live in LA, and so my wardrobe caters to that climate primarily)

That or they’re pieces when I do wear I always say, I need to wear these more because they are soooo good! Some are also items I lean on heavily in the summer months that i’d like to add into my AW line up too.

I get it. Silk scarfs (and well scarfs in general) are having a moment, but for every scarf look I have tried, i’m still surprised to see how many there are I haven’t. The above inspo spoke to me, especially as a way to break up a monochromatic look. For this one I had to thread the scarf through my shirt buttons and wrap it around the collar. I’m on the fence about this one, because while I didn’t dislike it, it took some getting use to. But the more I look at the execution photo, the more I can imagine myself experimenting with this look.

I could have easily done this with leather cord, but alas I didn’t have any. What I did have was a roll of elastic cord in this beautiful maroon color that i’ve been using to make leather journals with. I also didn’t have any chess pieces. After putting my thinking cap on, I decided a statement earring (an old Zara one) would be easier to attach because I could loop it through the earring back. I have to say, against a white shirt I actually quite enjoyed this, especially the hint of color thanks to the maroon cord. This kind of DIY is the perfect way to test drive a trend like the Juju Vera necklace before committing to the price tag, and to see if it genuinely feels like you (outside the fact it’s trending). While I didn’t personally feel drawn to that particular necklace, I did like the long length and the statement it provided, so this DIY felt like a great way to adapt it to my taste. I love the fact I can experiment with different earrings or brooches in my collection using this method.

Vintage Bally Box Leather Bag instead of a Hermes Kelly 32

It’s not hard to find a dupe for an Hermes Kelly, but what is hard to find is something that looks beautifully worn that is also box leather. Box leather will always have a place in my heart and when it comes to the Kelly I still think it’s an incredibly beautiful bag. However, this Bally box kelly style bag is a new discovery for me and I have to say, i’m kind of obsessed with it, so much so…I may have bought one!

Vintage Furla bag instead of the Alaïa Le Teckle Bag

What I love about this Furla bag is that it actually looks like a lot of fancy bags currently on the market. It would make a great alternative to The Row East West Margaux as well as the Alaïa bag. The silhouette nods to the nineties minimal aesthetic while still feeling modern. It’s giving quiet luxury on a budget. There is no such thing as too many ideas, and i’m also a nosy parker who has often wondered what other people do, in terms of the specifics, the tangible things to face the boredom/monotony head on, instead of adding more stuff into the mix. I asked some of my favorite Substack Style writers to share how they approach creativity in their own wardrobe using what they have. Get ready to take notes!

Rachel Soloman from Hey Mrs Soloman

“I love this question so much! Thank you for asking. I’ve got 5 tips I use solidly. And one thought – that I DO NOT adhere to, but you may!

1. Continuously “relocate” pieces. You get stuck wearing it thinking of it in one way because of where you place them. Like recently our cleaner had put some shorts in a drawer with stuff I use at the gym. Only I couldn’t find this one pair, which I had relocated to a hanger to style it with regular clothes. I don’t ever “put away” in one place, I move things around to encourage myself to try something in new ways. If I’m not wearing a shorter dress, I move it to my shirts. Constant tweaks like that.

2. Keep a Pinterest styling board: I keep a board called “styling” to use when I see people styling pieces similar to those I own.

3. Try challenges – I love doing challenges with guardrails, which force me to get creative. It’s why I do Sunday Night Outfit Planning with themes on IG … even just all white gets me doing things differently. Layering in different ways to solve for each situation while staying on the challenge. It’s another way to discover.

4. Focus on pliable pieces. I am writing something right now on “pliable dresses” – those you can layer up and down to get more use. Casual or dressy. Identify these players in your closet and see how many looks you can make with one on a weekend. If you feel you never have time, just set a timer for 15 minutes. Or 18. (A special number in Judaism ;-) and less of a commitment than 20).

5. Get a second opinion/use a stylist (I’ve had sessions with Allison Bornstein, Tereza Brink, Kelly Klein and loved them all!), which is surprisingly reasonable for a single session and incredibly inspiring. Or ask a stylish friend as a weekend activity – and return the favor. Tell them - “these are pieces I’d love to wear more.” Capture what they come up with and try it right away before you lose momentum.

6. Have fewer things. The math has to math! If you have fewer pieces you’ll wear them more and get more creative with them. If you have lots (as I do; I’m a real collector of clothing), you inherently have fewer chances to wear the same pieces and find new ways to do that. This is why the challenges help so many of us.”

“The number one item in my closet is denim. I think most of us have an item that we low-key collect; be it blazers, button downs, shoes, handbags, etc. So my favorite way of getting creative on those low-inspiration days is to take the denim from the bottom of my pile and that is the foundation of my outfit for the day. Because I generally put the most recent pair of denim on the top of my folded piles, I will take the bottom pair and build around that. It's easy for my favorites to be repeated over and over but that also is a recipe to feel "bored" with what I have; reaching for the least worn is a good exercise in playing with different washes, cuts, etc.” -

“I recently heard the old Spanish saying "toda escoba nueva barre bien"—every new broom sweeps clean—and it made me think of this question. Because yes, unless your clothes truly don’t align with your actual desires (as in your desires, not the ones imposed by marketing, trends, or other people), there’s usually a way to make them work—to make them correspond to your current pulsation. New things bring a spark effect, but eventually, they become just another item in your closet. Because yes, consuming is easier than creating, but it’s not more satisfying.

So what do I do? I actually do browse the sites that show me the things I (think I) desire—but then I go to my closet. Nothing replaces that. I wish there were a secret formula, but it’s all in putting my phone down and going to my closet—trying things on, taking things out, folding pieces back into place, bending down to pick something up, looking for that thing I don't remember if I donated, reaching for something too high, putting the step stool back. Sometimes the result is more satisfying than the reference. Sometimes it’s not. But the result is always mine—a product of my own thinking, intuition, and creative effort. And that’s usually a better feeling than the cheap dopamine hit of “buy now.” -

"I bought an orange shirt recently and I have been struggling to wear it in a way that doesn't make me feel like a human jack-o-lantern, so I've been looking at paintings for inspiration. I love Helen Frankenthaler's use of color, so I'll search "Helen Frankenthaler Orange" and then take cues from the colors she pairs with orange on the canvas--cobalt blue and mustard yellow or peachy pink. I also like the Wada Sanzo Dictionary of Color Combinations for this! I don't always have the right colors already in my closet to make something work instantly, but thinking about what I'm wearing in relation to artistic compositions does open my mind up to possibility in a way I find helpful when I feel stuck on something like orange = Halloween." -

“If I’m feeling bored with my wardrobe, I first remind myself that I have more than enough things to create new ideas! I usually will set aside some time to create new outfit combinations - colors, textures, or proportions I haven’t tried before. I’ll borrow from my husband to lean into new fits. Style things in ways they aren’t intended to be worn. It can help to daydream a bit to think outside your usual comfort zone or routine — what would you want to wear for an exciting trip, how would you style pieces if you could only bring a handful of things? If I’m feeling uninspired, I usually look at imagery - interiors, menswear, fashion magazines, archives, or my endless camera roll of saved inspo. I can almost always find something that sparks a new idea which can be all we need to get the creativity flowing again!” -

So there you have it, a plethora of tangible steps and ideas to make what you have feel new and exciting again, to get creative using what you have. My core style belief is that curiosity and creativity is a muscle you can build through practice. ICYMI and you’re looking for my summer short recommendations, I created a classic short edit (all under $100). Hopefully it goes without saying, any time i’m showcasing how to style an item, feel free to use this as inspiration you can apply to your existing wardrobe. All items shown throughout are pieces from my existing closet.

1. The tank, blazer & belt combo

To me this is how I would wear my shorts all summer along if I could get away with it. I just feel more me with some kind of outerwear added into the mix. My linen blazers see the most use during the summer months but I do relish the opportunity to pull out slightly heavier blazers (mostly silk/cotton blends) for evening. I think there’s nothing chicer than a blazer draped over the shoulders, the arms loose and free.

2. The tucked Shirt with (or without) rolled sleeves

Shirts of all kinds see a lot of wear in my wardrobe. I just love the slouch of a sleeve rolled up with a pair of shorts, especially with a half or full tuck. When the temperatures really sore, that’s when I opt for linen shirts, in particular a sleeveless linen shirt. I also love this look without a belt where the focus is on the simplicity of the shirt and shorts. For this look to feel like me, I like the shirt (at least) a little bit oversized and not at all fitted. I think it adds a nice contrast when the top half feels a little more boxy vs the bottom half.

While I continue to mull over whether or not i’m going to do another no buy wardrobe challenge, I spent the past week taking stock of what I do have, revisiting my traffic light wishlist and preparing the items I want to sell/donate.

As a trouser lover, summer poses an obvious struggle. If you’ve been here while you already know of my love for the Aritzia Effortless Pants, and how I’d estimate I spend half of my life (the cooler months specifically) in these trousers.

In addition to getting two pairs of white linen slouchy trousers, and one dress, what I realised I really needed, were shorts. More specifically to diversify my choices when it comes to shorts given that the few I do have I wear a lot. What I miss about summer is being able to utilize my belt collection, as most of my linen trousers are drawstring pants, and only one of my existing pairs of shorts actually has belt loops. Belts add so much to an outfit, and I think i’d feel more like myself if I could incorporate more belts into the mix this summer.

I wanted more classic short options that could serve for any occasion, be dressed up or dressed down. I wanted above all else, comfort…sorry no Agolde jeans here! I’m also on a budget. My go to for highstreet pieces in the past has always been H&M premium but I was curious to see what else was out there. After a rampant internet search and several screenshots later, I head out to spend an entire afternoon trying on said shorts and these are the results.

For every image of me in the fitting room/wearing them at home, I’m also going to show how they are styled/fit on a straight size model. As someone in a midsize body I always want to know what these items actually look like when they’re worn on anyone other than a size 4 or smaller. I made sure to wear a classic white tee, a black belt and my black flip flop heels which I’ve worn throughout.

Abercrombie High Rise Dad Shorts in Dark wash

I wanted to start off on a positive note, and knowing I already had this short in a lighter wash, (what I would describe as medium, which I don’t think they do any longer in my exact wash) I had been meaning to add the dark wash to my wardrobe. They didn’t have any curve love ones in stock, so I actually went with a size 33 which felt very comfy, and less fitted than my curve love size 32.

Abercrombie High Rise Dad Shorts in Dark wash What you need to know:

Price: $70 (bought on offer for $44.63 (they matched the price instore with the online/app pricing)

Fabric composition: Body: 99% Cotton, 1% Elastane / Pocket Bag:70% Polyester, 30% Cotton

Sizing: 23 - 37 (also available in the curve love edition)

Comfort: Very comfortable, that 1% elastane does give that little bit of stretch that I think you need if you want comfort.

Quality: Great! As someone who has quite a few pieces of denim from Abercrombie, i’ve yet to find a brand who does denim for curvy women better.

Banana Republic High Rise Linen Bermuda Short

Why I chose today of all days to wear black knickers, i’ll never know! Needless to say it showcases just how see through these are. These looked promising on the hanger, but I just didn’t love them on me. I’m wearing an XL here.

Fabric composition: 100% Linen

Sizing: XSS - XXL

Comfort: A bit up the bum…IYKYK. Not for me, and not for this price.

Quality: They were nicely made, but nothing groundbreaking.

J. Crew 4" Heritage Chino Short in Black

Am I chino wearing woman now? Why I believe I am! From looking at the image of the shorts not on a model I probably would have passed on these, but these were so comfy, and I loved the fact they were mostly cotton, with a little structure to them. I’m wearing a US size 14 here and I loved them so much, I also bought them in white (see below).

J. Crew Heritage Chino Shorts What you need to know:

Price: $59.50 (But purchased for $34.50 due to a promotion)

Fabric composition: 97% cotton/3% elastane.

Sizing: 00-24

Comfort: Extremely comfortable!

Quality: Love the fabric, and the simple classic design.

J. Crew 4" Heritage Chino Short in White

Again the simplicity of these struck me when it comes to stylistic choices. This is also about as short as i’m willing to go with my shorts, but they do come in longer lengths, but alas they were out of stock. I feel like I need a sailing boat to go with this outfit, feels very ralph lauren on a budget, and I’m kind of into it. Also wearing a size 14.

Comfort: Extremely comfortable!

J. Crew 3" Harbor Short In Linen White

I didn’t love these, even though I swear they’re similar in length to the Chino shorts, they just felt a little too short. I also didn’t love the fit. Granted a good iron would make these look ten times better, but I felt like the pockets sat weird and it kind of grabbed a bit at my crotch, yet they were too baggy around my waist. I tried these on in an XL.

J. Crew 3'' Harbor Short In Linen What you need to know:

Price: $69.50 but I paid $34.50 due to a promotion they had

Fabric composition: 100% Linen

Sizing: XXXS - 3X

Comfort: These had stretch at the back waistband so they were definitely comfortable but in a way that affected the overall fit negatively in my opinion.

Quality: These weren’t bad, but also not amazing. I have a better linen short coming up!

Gap 11" Mid Rise Longline Denim Shorts in Medium Indigo

I really wanted to love these, I liked them, but I didn’t love them. I think the mid rise fit through me off a little, plus they felt a little too wide at the bottom of the leg. They were also quite a thick denim which I worried would be a little too warm in the LA summer heat. These were a size 32.

Gap 11" Mid Rise Longline Denim Shorts What you need to know:

Price: $69.95

Fabric composition: Cotton 95%, Recycled Cotton 5%

Sizing: 24-35

Comfort: Not bad, but a little too thick for my liking, perfect for LA winter I guess.

Quality: Very nice, I had forgotten how good certain pairs of Gap denim can be.

Madewell The Drapey Twill Pleated Short in White

These looked better on than they do in the photo, which i’m not sure what to make of and I do think these look better with a belt. They were very comfortable and gave the feeling of a short with a bit more structure, a little more formal which I liked. I went back and forth on these, so much so I actually went back to the shop for a second try on. I think it was the pleats on this that I just couldn’t make my mind up on. I loved the length of the short and that it wasn’t too close to the leg, but ultimately I didn’t come away with these. I’m wearing these and the black ones below in a US size 14.

Fabric composition: 48% TENCEL™ Lyocell/33% cotton/19% linen.

Sizing: 00 - 16

Comfort: Very comfortable, roomy but still with a secure fit (no gaping at the back).

Madewell The 1997 Denim Bermuda Short in Bronxville Wash

These were one of the pieces I was most excited to try on from images I had screen grabbed before heading into town. I love the look of the white denim but they were sold out in store and out of my size online. This dark wash was stunning though, and after trying the Gap one’s I mentioned earlier I much prefer the cut of these. Happy to report that these came home with me, and I can’t wait to style them!

Madewell The 1997 Denim Bermuda Short What you need to know:

Price: $98

Fabric composition: 100% cotton (5% of which is recycled)

Sizing: 23-33

Comfort: Incredibly comfortable considering these are 100% cotton. Not as heavy as other jeans i’ve tried which is what I want from a summer short. I will say there was a smidge of gaping at the back but I think I need that in a denim short without any stretch if I want to be able to eat a burger in it…which I 100% do.

Quality: I loved everything about these, the cut, the wash, and the fabric.

Madewell Pintucked Shorts in 100% Linen Black

I don’t feel like the photo does these justice, but these shorts feel the perfect linen short. We have belt loops, a relaxed tailored cut and in many ways I almost feel like this creates the illusion of a short skirt which I quite like. These felt light as a feather without scraping on quality.

Fabric composition: 100% Linen

Sizing: 00 - 16

Comfort: Very comfortable, with or without a belt.

Quality: Really nice, top marks for the cut, the fabric and the way it falls on the body.

The Final Five

Going home with five pairs of shorts may seem excessive, but I feel like living in LA where it’s hot most of the year, I can justify it. I’m also not a skirt person. I feel more confident at the thought of going into another no buy now I have a wider selection of short options. I also think I need to donate/sell some of my old shorts that are now too small for me, so some of these are also replacements.
